Description
~ The Nantucket Land Council (NLC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit dedicated to protecting Nantucket’s natural world and rural character by holding and enforcing conservation restrictions, commissioning scientific research, monitoring development proposals, engaging in legal proceedings to protect natural resources, and educating the public on local environmental issues. ~
Since its founding in 1974, the Nantucket Land Council has effectively protected more than 1,300 of acres of land. Of the properties which were purchased outright, most have now been conveyed to other Nantucket conservation groups, particularly the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and Nantucket Islands Land Bank, which are equipped to manage large tracts of land.
Position Overview
The Nantucket Land Council is seeking a full time, year round Resource Ecologist to lead our education and advocacy programs on Nantucket. The position requires significant interaction with the community and local schools, speaking before local permitting boards, and involves collaboration with the Town of Nantucket and other island organizations.
The position will also involve supporting research in many areas of island ecology including fresh and marine water resources, rare and endangered plant/animal species, and invasive plant/animal species. Ongoing projects include monitoring water quality of freshwater ponds, aspects of freshwater fish populations, aquatic vegetation, monitoring water quality of estuaries and harbors, eelgrass health assessments, eelgrass restoration, invasive green crab population dynamics, stormwater point source pollution, watershed non-point source pollution, precipitation and groundwater monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Direct educational programs for community members and local schools.
- Attend local regulatory hearings and submit written comment or speak publicly on applications.
- Provide assistance with conservation restriction management and inspections.
- Work with the Town of Nantucket and other island organizations as a part of collaborations and committees.
- Communicate with members on local environmental issues.
- Oversee research programs which may involve independent field work and/or collaborations with other organizations or consultants.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- B.S. or B.A. in Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related biological/ecological field.
- Applicants must have excellent communication and writing skills, and must be able to work well independently and collaboratively.
Desired Qualifications:
- Public speaking and demonstrated leadership skills are critical for this position.
- Ability to work in schools and the community required.
- Previous work involving public education should be highlighted in applications.
- Applicants should be self-motivated and have excellent time management.
- Ecological field work and monitoring experience is highly desirable, as is a proficiency with GIS and data entry/management.
Work Environment:
- The NLC has a small office and staff work in close quarters.
- The Resource Ecologist position involves significant field work in a variety of environments and conditions.
- Applicants should be comfortable working outdoors in inclement weather and should be prepared for physically demanding activities.
