~ Savannah Tree Foundation (STF) is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, and planting trees across Chatham County, GA through education, advocacy, and action. ~

STF’s volunteers have been planting and caring for trees in Savannah and across Chatham County, GA since 1982. The Savannah Tree Foundation is working with local government, community partners, Chatham County citizens, and youth to grow the tree canopy for a healthier, safer, economically-strong, and environmentally-sound community.

Position Overview

Savannah Tree Foundation is seeking qualified candidates for a new Field Manager position. The Field Manager, under direction from the Executive Director, will manage tree planting, tree care, and education programs. The Field Manager will provide supervision of community volunteers and some interns. The Field Manager must be a committed and driven contributor to the Savannah Tree Foundation’s mission who will help grow the organization’s effectiveness through tree planting and stewardship, advocacy and outreach, and education programs.

The Field Manager position is full-time, exempt. The work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday. The schedule may vary at times.

Responsibilities

Tree Care:

  • Ensure ongoing health of trees with pruning, mulching, weeding, and watering.
  • Knowledge of best practices for planting, pruning, and tree care and ability to teach those practices to volunteers and partners.
  • Implement tree planting program.
  • Familiarity with species selection and tree planting in the coastal area (zone 9).

Education:

  • Work with community partners including schools, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, neighborhood associations, garden clubs, and others to develop effective education programs.

Community Relations:

  • Advocate for trees and the urban forest throughout the community and in particular with government, special projects, and community organizations.
  •  Foster strong working relationships with partner agencies, government representatives, and industry partners.
  • Serve as a liaison with the community, other organizations, and the general public.
  • Promote effective partnerships and cooperation with private, public, and non-profit entities to achieve programmatic goals.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for Savannah Tree Foundation at public forums and events.

Program Management:

  • Coordinate the development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing improvement of Savannah Tree Foundation programs, including tree planting, tree maintenance, educational outreach, and research.
  • Maintain accurate records on program activities and participants to meet grant requirements and ensure ongoing organizational effectiveness.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent skills and experience.
  • 2 or more years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to trees and the environment.
  • Interest in environmental issues and generally socially conscious individual.
  • Experience working independently.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work evenings and other days as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people of different backgrounds.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to carry out operational or program activities as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, stand for long periods of time, and to safely lift and move more than 50 lbs on a daily basis.
  • Willing and able to become CPR certified.
  • Clean background check, driving record, and drug test will be required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with proper tree pruning techniques and ability to teach others.
  • ISA-certified arborist or willing and able to become certified.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry, arboriculture, and/or horticulture.
  • Experience with community outreach, volunteers, and partnerships.
  • Experience working with children and the public.
  • Communications experience including social media and the press.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software including Microsoft Office Compensation Low to mid-$30s, based on qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in:

  • Providing tree care and maintenance.
  • Working within program budgets, ensuring appropriate volunteer levels and tool and supply availability to carry out programs effectively.
  • Developing effective working relationships with community partners and local government.
  • Relationship building with community non-profits and partner organizations.
  • Independent leadership for organization soundness.
  • Developing earned income opportunities and initiating new programs.
  • Creating compelling outreach and education programs.
  • Continuously learning and teaching about trees and the role they play in society.
