Position Overview
The City of Somerville is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator for the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE). OSE is responsible for policy, planning, and programs for sustainability in municipal operations and the community.
The Sustainability Coordinator is a critical part of the team leading the City's activities on climate change. The ideal candidate has a broad knowledge of sustainability as well as deep expertise in certain topics, can work both independently and as part of team, has experience managing projects and relationships, and possesses the passion and curiosity necessary to expand one of the country's most ambitious sustainability programs.
Responsibilities
The employee manages sustainability related activities for the City, acts as an advisor and technical resource for departments across the City, and conducts outreach to community members and stakeholders. Under the supervision of the Director of OSE, the Sustainability Coordinator:
- Manages energy usage database and develops reporting and communication tools for increasing awareness of energy consumption.
- Manages grants and interdepartmental projects on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
- Identifies new potential energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives.
- Conducts periodic updates of greenhouse gas inventories.
- Designs and executes multimedia climate change and sustainability awareness engagement campaign, building on SustainaVille (www.somervillema.gov/sustsainaville)
- Maintains relationships and collaborates on sustainability programs and projects with key entities outside of the administration (e.g., Somerville Schools, local business community)
- Identifies opportunities for and manages interdepartmental projects that increase sustainability of municipal operations and service delivery.
- Provides technical analysis and contributes to development of City plans and policies on sustainability and climate change.
- Manages contractors and consultants, including quality management and budget.
- Advises the administration on climate change and sustainability issues.
- Addresses ad-hoc residential, business and departmental needs related to environmental issues such, energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate change risks, and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
Qualfications
- College Degree and 5 years experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Advanced Degree (at least Masters) is highly preferred. Degrees in engineering, environmental science, architecture/design, or planning are preferred.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency, energy management, environmental planning, climate change, sustainability, urban infrastructure design.
- Ability to multi-task and obtain interdepartmental cooperation and communication.
- Ability to meet and deal with the public effectively and appropriately.
- Ability to handle problems and emergencies effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a computer.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to maintain, manage, and organize records.
- Ability to deal appropriately with city employees, city officials and the general public.
- Excellent computer skills for word processing, spreadsheets and databases; excellent analytical skills; familiarity with social media and community engagement platforms; and excellent organizational skills.
Compensation: Salary is $66,950.00 per year; paid weekly at $1,287.50; plus benefits.
