The Sustainability Institute at The College of New Jersey is focused on societal capacity to understand and act on the major issues of our day. We see unsustainable development as a crisis of governance. Sustainability issues are complex and technical, difficult to understand, and often require a new level of cooperation among key decision makers and the public.
The Sustainability Institute engages in research, pilot projects, and large scale policy development and education programs to build our collective capacity to understand the key trends that threaten a high quality of life in the future, and devise and implement solutions.
We aim to build on our core institutional strengths in energy, land use, natural resources, community form, and decision making processes. The Sustainability Institute is located on the campus of The College of New Jersey in Holman Hall, and draws upon the College's ample academic resources including faculty, students and research facilities.
Position Overview:
The Sustainability Institute at the College of New Jersey (SI@TCNJ) seeks a motivated person to join our team working on the Sustainable Jersey Certification Program as Director of Energy Programs.
SI@TCNJ is a "think and do" tank that works to advance understanding and implementation of best practices that will lead to sustainable development. The position will have a significant role implementing the award winning Sustainable Jersey Certification Program.
The Director of Energy Programs will report to the Co-Director of the Institute, and will be responsible for leading a team of Institute staff and external stakeholders to design and implement programs that support state and local government in implementing sustainable energy. This will include developing policy recommendations, designing new training and technical support programs, and identifying opportunities for developing shared services.
Major Responsibilities:
- Manage major contracts for the Sustainable Jersey program relating to energy.
- Conduct applied research and engage in report writing and policy analysis.
- Convene and work with stakeholder groups to design and
implement new programs targeting local governments. - Update existing best practices for local governments to ensure they are current.
- Coordinate with external partners and funders.
- Design and implement technical assistance and education programs.
- Assign and oversee tasks to other SI@TCNJ staff.
Qualifications:
- This position requires a bachelor's degree in planning, public policy, engineering, economics, environmental science, or other relevant discipline plus significant relevant professional experience.
- An advanced degree is preferred.
- Organizational capacity, creative and entrepreneurial thinking and superior personal and communication skills are required.
- The successful applicant will have familiarity with the varied economic, social, environmental, and policy topics associated with research and outreach on sustainable development, and with energy policy in particular.
- The position also requires experience with project management, public policy development and implementation context.
- Specific experience in New Jersey is a plus.
