Conservation Planner

Position Overview:

Our Southern Alberta Chapter has a wonderful opportunity for an individual to use their skills in the application of scientific research to conservation campaigning and programming in the Environmental Non-profit sector. This individual will take the lead on many conservation campaigns, bringing their creativity and initiative to help incorporate current scientific research in conservation recommendations, campaign planning and implementation.

There are numerous conservation issues in Southern Alberta ranging from the need to recover species at risk and protect critical habitats to influencing land use planning to ensure conservation related outcomes. CPAWS Southern Alberta takes a solutions oriented approach to these issues, basing recommendations and campaigns on the best available science and input from local stakeholders and citizens. Our holistic approach to landscape conservation, productive relationships with local groups, and our ability to think outside of the box has earned us a credible, positive relationship in Alberta's conservation movement.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Conservation Planner is responsible for:

• Planning and implementing conservation campaigns.
• Representing CPAWS at various multi-stakeholder planning initiatives and events.
• Creating and implementing a government relations strategy to further campaigns.
• Strategic planning for the Conservation Department.
• Working with communications staff and media to increase public awareness of various conservation campaigns.
• Keeping current on relevant scientific information.
• Supervising summer staff and interns in the conservation department.
• Working with other ENGOs to create and implement collaborative conservation campaigns.
• Fund development and reporting.
• Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

• Completed undergraduate degree in biological or conservation sciences.
• Knowledge and passion of Southern Alberta ecosystems and biodiversity.
• Minimum of 3 years work experience in a conservation-related field.
• Strong public speaking and writing skills.
• Previous experience with government and/or media relations is an asset.
• Proficient with Microsoft Word suite of programs.
• Initiative, tact, and discretion.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Position Location: Calgary and some travel in Southern Alberta

Position Start Date: As soon as possible
