Position Overview:

The corporate center based sustainability team serves as the hub for global strategy related to sustainability for eBay Inc. It also serves as catalyst, incubator and early stage manager for new programs and initiatives that meet our sustainability objectives and advance eBay's leadership in shaping a new era of more sustainable commerce.  

The director of operational sustainability is a highly visible leadership position within that team that has primary responsibility for helping a high growth, innovative company understand and manage its corporate environmental footprint during a time of exciting corporate evolution, across a range of facility types and operations including data centers, employee offices, and recently, fulfillment centers.    

Responsibilities: 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directing all work, globally, related to reducing eBay's environmental footprint and advancing eBay's interest in adopting and promoting innovative clean energy technology.
  • Developing and socializing a comprehensive understanding of eBay Inc.'s corporate environmental footprint - including energy, carbon, water and waste - and establishing global programs and processes to baseline and continuously measure that footprint.
  • Leading eBay's executive Sustainability Steering Committee, which ‘owns' eBay Inc's corporate environmental footprint. Working with the Committee to understand baselines and develop internal targets and strategies for improvement that support business objectives and meet financial hurdles.
  • Researching and driving business and executive support for new, ROI positive opportunities for gaining efficiency, testing implementation of renewable energy solutions, and launching other innovative, footprint reducing technologies.
  • Globalizing eBay Inc's investment in operational sustainability, including Europe and APAC regions.
  • Managing global sustainable operations seed funding budget.
  • In collaboration with business owners and sustainability team members, leading stakeholder consultation and engagement around eBay Inc's direct footprint, including NGOs, academia and IT and retail industry associations.
  • Leading, in collaboration with the Sustainability Steering Committee and other internal stakeholders, eBay's response to the Carbon Disclosure Project and other key disclosure and reporting efforts.
  • Liaising with the community manager, eBay Green Team to harness the energy and passion of eBay's 2000+ employee green team for meaningful environmental projects.
  • Working with the senior manager, sustainability communications to frame, articulate and communicate eBay's operational sustainability journey (both successes and challenges).
  • Building innovative partnerships with other leading companies and organizations in the operational sustainability space, balancing corporate priorities and internal stakeholder needs.
  • Serving as an external spokesperson for eBay operational sustainability programs

Qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree - Master's or beyond preferred

  • 15+ years of relevant experience managing an operational sustainability strategy in a large company
  • Direct leadership experience working with data center, employee office building and fulfillment center footprints
  • Unparalleled ability to influence, evangelize and coalition build at all levels, including executives
  • Strong financial analysis ability, and proven track record of performing robust business analyses of sustainability related projects
  • In-depth expertise sustainability principles, issues, politics and players
  • Proven experience ‘selling in' ideas and concepts and getting buy in from multiple stakeholders
  • Flexibility, open mindedness, collaborative nature, and willingness to embrace ambiguity absolutely essential
  • Strong verbal and written communications and presentation skills
