Ever dreamed of starting your own Environmental Education Center? Well, now is your chance to help to build a residential program from its inception! The new Living River Environmental Center (LREC) is opening on a 440 acre tract owned by the Presbyterian Church that is bordered on three sides by the Cahaba River just south of Birmingham, Alabama. The Cahaba River has been identified as one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world.

Position Overview:

The LREC will be managed and run by the McDowell Environmental Center (MEC), the premier environmental education center in the Southeast. We are looking for a mature person who is self motivated, willing to work long hours, mentor others, positive through thick and thin, flexible, an environmentalist, familiar with the natural world, and ready to make a huge difference in the world!

Responsibilities:

The LREC Director will work for the first year on site at McDowell Environmental Center where they will work closely with the MEC Director and Assistant Director to learn the Center's philosophies, policies and procedures. They will also work on duties for the new Living River EC such as curriculum development, staff hiring and training, marketing and promotion, grant writing, and website development. They must love teaching children in the great outdoors. All MEC administrators also teach.

After a year, the LREC Director and two Program Coordinators, will transfer to the Living River site to begin hosting residential school groups at the new facility. LREC will continue to be under the supervision of MEC, but will be encouraged to develop and grow into a unique program.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

Experience with residential programming and supervision of staff, interpersonal skills with peers, co-workers and all who come through the program, teaching experience (preferably in the outdoors), naturalist skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, basic computer skills, ability to connect to children, Bachelors degree, commitment to at least 3-5 years of hard work and enthusiasm.

Preferred Requirements:

Experience living in the setting that you work, marketing experience, successful grant writing experience, website experience, knowledge of the flora and fauna of Alabama (or willingness to learn), Masters degree preferred.

Compensation: Health insurance, a private lodging, food provided whenever either camp kitchen is running, Camp McDowell's 1100 acres and Living River's 440 acres to explore and creeks to paddle, flexible work schedule during non-residential season, amazing and inspirational people with whom to work.
