The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is an independent, non-profit organization working internationally and in the U.S.

Position Overview:   

The Institute for Sustainable Communities is seeking short-term technical specialists for upcoming USAID task orders in the areas of:

  • 1) Civil society development - work with NGOs and grassroots activists; manage large grants and training programs; work in conflict and post-conflict countries and in transitioning environments, support coalition building and network development.
  • 2) Advocacy and policy reform - work with civil society activists to advocate and lobby on national reform issues and local community issues; knowledge of various reform efforts taking place in transitioning countries, engage in budget and policy reform analysis.
  • 3) Community mobilization - work with local level grassroots organizations to identify and prioritize community needs; capacity building in community action planning and grants management.
  • 4) Watchdog and monitoring - support civil society organizations to monitor government and state institutions in various policy areas to promote transparency and accountability; work on monitoring judicial reform and government anti-corruption strategies in particular.
  • 5) Conflict management - develop strategies to mitigate potential conflict; serve as trainer to local organizations and government officials on negotiation and mediation techniques; design and implement Early Warning Systems to monitor potential human rights abuses and/or conflict pressure points.
  • 6) Government/citizen engagement - improving the structures, mechanisms and processes to improve trust and confidence in government systems and services.
  • 7) Cross cutting issues - youth, technology, gender

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field, preferred;
  • Experience working with USAID;
  • At least 5 years working in transitioning countries;
  • Demonstrated experience in the management and design of projects in post-conflict or transitional settings. 
  • Must be willing to be deployed at short notice and to reside in sometimes difficult living conditions;
  • Must be fluent in English.  Seeking Arabic speakers in particular.
