The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists.  We have offices in Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Beijing.  Our staff of over 350 includes attorneys, scientists, policy analysts and educators working to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

Position Summary:

NRDC seeks to hire a full-time attorney to join the staff of NRDC's Midwest Office, located in Chicago, Illinois.  NRDC's Midwest Office is composed of a team of seven professional staff and support staff, including communication, legal, and policy specialists. 

The Midwest water attorney will report to the Director of the Midwest Program and be responsible for legal and policy advocacy on water issues in the Midwest, with a particular emphasis on the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins, including issues such a invasive species, municipal water pollution, and the destruction and alteration of vital water resources.

The position will also involve advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels, with a particular focus in monitoring regulatory and enforcement practices at the state level under the Clean Water Act and relevant state and local authorities. 

The person in this position will work closely with both his/her colleagues in the Midwest Office and with attorneys and policy experts in NRDC.  NRDC represents both its own members and a range of outside clients, including neighborhood associations, regional grassroots organizations, and environmental and public health groups. 

In general, responsibilities will include federal and state litigation, policy analysis, media outreach, legislative work, regulatory comments, coalition building and/or developing campaign.

Skills & Knowledge Requirements:

  • J.D.; three to five years of litigation experience preferred; familiarity with water issues and the Clean Water Act a plus.
  • Federal court clerkship and/or government attorney experience are a plus
  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills
  • Commitment to nonprofit/public interest advocacy
