Job Description:
Primarily, the Student Conservation Association intern will assist the GCSWCD and NYCDEP with the development and implementation of education and outreach programs to inform watershed stakeholders regarding stream management issues. In addition, the intern will assist the GCSWCD and NYCDEP in development and implementation of a streamside riparian program, collection of geomorphic stream data, and work in cooperation with the GCSWCD, NYCDEP, local municipalities and other watershed stakeholders to implement stream corridor protection and restoration recommendations as identified in detailed stream management plans developed for watersheds in the Catskills.
Agency/Program Description:
The GCSWCD and NYCDEP are utilizing geomorphic based stream stability assessments and restoration methods to protect water quality in the NYC upstate water supply. The program is working on watershed scale stream management planning, and the implementation of stream protection and restoration projects utilizing natural channel design concepts. The host site is located in the northeast Catskill Mountains, primarily in the Schoharie and Esopus watersheds.
Major: Environmental Science/Engineering, Watershed Management, Environmental Education, Geology, Hydrology, Botany, Wildlife Management or related field. Degree required: BA/BS/MS
Fields of interest: AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Watershed Management
Other information/requirements: Member must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, including effective writing and education program implementation. The member should also be capable of performing physical activities related to management of plant materials and field data collection. Personal transportation required though the GCSWCD typically provides transportation to work sites.
Salary: Weekly living allowance ($160), Weekly commuting allowance ($30), Monthly Rent stipend ($400), Final AmeriCorps education award ($4750)
