Agency/Program Description:
New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) is charged with protecting the watersheds that host the NYC drinking water supply. The NYCDEP Stream Management Program focuses its efforts in Catskill mountain watersheds that deliver 90% of the water supply. In support of the City's mandate to deliver high quality water to its residents, the Stream Management Program and its partners construct stream stability restoration projects to minimize suspended sediment input into the water supply reservoirs. These restoration projects also aim to achieve multiple goals, such as property protection and habitat improvement, in order to engage a wide range of local and regional stakeholders.
With several projects in place, the NYCDEP and its partners must evaluate the effectiveness of these projects in meeting various goals, and adjust assessment and restoration methods accordingly. To increase the effectiveness of restoration projects and expand project implementation opportunities, the NYCDEP must incorporate new technologies to address the wide range of restoration needs for stream banks and channels as well as riparian and wetland areas, in a variety of landuse settings.
