Description

Background:


The Residents' Committee to Protect the Adirondacks (RCPA) is looking for a
forester to manage the Adirondack Park Sustainable Forestry Project. The
RCPA is a SmartWood/FSC accredited Forest Manager that provides Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications to non-industrial forestland owners in
New York's six-million acre Adirondack Park. The RCPA has certified over
6,000 acres, anticipates certifying another 3,000 acres by mid-April, and has a
pool of over 15,000 acres of interested landowners to certify in over the next
several years. The RCPA is the only certified SmartWood Forest Manager in
New York State.


The is an exciting opportunity for the right forester with a strong commitment to
FSC sustainable forestry certification to live and work in the Adirondack Park
and manage an innovative program that promotes excellent forest management.


The Residents' Committee to Protect the Adirondacks is an IRS-approved
not-for-profit organization dedicated to the stewardship and protection of the
natural resources and human communities of the Adirondack Park. The RCPA
pursues this mission through grassroots organizing, research, advocacy,
sustainable forestry certification, education, and legal action. The RCPA has
3,000 member households and maintains its headquarters in North Creek, on the
Hudson River in the central Adirondacks. The RCPA has an annual budget of
$350,000 and has four employees, numerous volunteers and activists, and is
guided by a 10-member Board of Directors.


Duties:


The RCPA is looking for a forester who has experience writing forest
management plans for small landowners. The forester would be expected to write
a half dozen plans per year that meet FSC standards and procedures and work
with private consulting foresters on another half dozen plans per year. The
forester is expected to manage all aspects of the RCPA's SmartWood
accreditation, which includes recordkeeping and reporting necessary to comply
with annual audits and 5-year assessments. This includes tracking timber sales,
inspecting recent logging operations, updating management plans, working with
landowners to ensure annual monitoring protocols are performed.


Further, the forester is expected to help with the continued formation of a
certified landowners cooperative/association that will work on marketing of local,
Adirondack certified wood. The forester is also expected to develop contacts
with the national FSC certification and forestland owner cooperative movements.


Qualifications:


Applicants should be foresters with experience in writing forest management
plans, low impact logging, and marketing. The position involves excellent field
skills, strong public speaking and writing skills, strong administrative skills, as well
as working knowledge of Arcview GIS, Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint,
NEDS-1. Strong personal management, self direction, and social skills are
needed.


Compensation:


The Forester will work out of the RCPA office in North Creek in the central
Adirondacks. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience.
