Background:


Grand Canyon Trust is pleased to announce recruitment for a new position, Deputy
Director, Conservation Programs. This position is full-time, salaried, and located at
our headquarters office in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Deputy Director will report to
the President of the Grand Canyon Trust.

The mission of the Grand Canyon Trust is to protect and restore the Grand Canyon
and the canyon country of the Colorado Plateau ~ its spectacular landscapes,
flowing rivers, clean air, diversity of plants and animals, and areas of beauty and
solitude.


Duties:


The Deputy Director will be responsible for managing the conservation programs
of the Grand Canyon Trust. The Deputy Director will:

  • Manage conservation activities to protect the Grand Canyon, the Greater
    Grand Canyon ecosystem, Greater Zion, Arches-Canyonlands, as well as
    the Trust's programs in air quality, forest restoration, public lands
    management, grazing retirement, and energy.
  • Supervise conservation program staff located in offices in Springdale and
    Moab, Utah and the Trust's headquarters in Flagstaff, Arizona.
  • Oversee the Trust's conservation programs with Native American tribes and
    supervise the Director of Tribal Governmental Affairs.
  • Interact with federal agencies, tribal, state and local governments,
    communities, and other organizations to develop projects, policies, and
    funding to protect and restore air, land, and water and to influence policies to
    improve the conservation of the Colorado Plateau.
  • Work closely with the President, the Board, and the Trust's Deputy
    Director, Philanthropy, Administration, and Communications to raise funds
    from private and public sources for major conservation initiatives.


Qualifications:


Applicants for this position must have:

  • Substantial experience in a senior position in land conservation, conservation
    advocacy, natural resource law, or environmental policy.
  • A thorough working knowledge of the public land management agencies in
    the West and natural resource issues such as public lands management,
    water, restoration, air quality, forestry, grazing, conservation ballot initiatives,
    wilderness, national parks, state trust lands, private land protection, and other
    strategic conservation tools.
  • Excellent managerial skills and experience at supervising and motivating
    program staff. This position has up to 10 direct reports working on Grand
    Canyon, Arches/Canyonlands, Zion, Native America, Government Affairs,
    air quality, forest restoration, and public lands management.
  • Extensive experience in conservation advocacy, high-level understanding of
    political processes, expertise in conceptualizing and implementing large-scale
    conservation strategies, ability to negotiate and "close the deal."
  • Prior experience with non-profit conservation organizations is preferred.
  • Experience performing effectively in a wide variety of cultural and physical
    environments is essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the conservation of the natural resources of
    the West.
  • Skilled communication abilities, and be willing to serve as a spokesperson.
  • Ability and experience working at senior levels of government, business, and
    non-profit sectors.


Compensation:


The salary range for this position is $70,000 - 75,000, depending on experience.
Relocation expenses are possible. A full benefits package is also offered.


Closing Date: The position of Deputy Director, Conservation Programs will be advertised until
filled. Initial screening begins February 1, 2003.
