Position Overview

NRG has opportunities for enthusiastic, experienced and versatile Project Engineers at intermediate and senior levels, to support utility and commercial solar projects from initial opportunity to commercial operation.

Ideal candidates have a thorough understanding of PV project development, energy resources, technology and systems, and are familiar with PPA's, EPC contracts, and project permitting processes.

We are also seeking a seasoned power engineer with experience in utility solar, wind, or industrial power generation, and expertise in specification, testing and commissioning of power plant control and monitoring systems (SCADA/DAS); MV and HV substation equipment and construction; interconnection engineering and permitting; power system design, load flow analysis, protection and relay coordination. 


Principal Responsibilities
 

  • Plan, carry out, and manage project development engineering activities and technical due diligence on project acquisitions. 
  • Manage engineering for solar power projects especially large grid connected PV systems and optimize system designs to achieve targets for production, generating capacity, capital cost, financial returns, etc. 
  • Support or oversee energy input assessments and power output analyses to optimize site layouts and equipment selection to maximize performance and minimize lifecycle costs. 
  • Direct activities of designers, consultants and contractors, and manage meetings and conference calls to achieve efficient use of resources, meet deadlines for deliverables, minimize delays, avoid crises and resolve conflicts. 
  • Write, edit and/or review technical scope of work documents, specifications, procedures, site reports, progress reports, feasibility studies, proposals, presentations, etc. Review and negotiate technical aspects of EPC contracts, interconnect agreements, etc. 
  • Coordinate with Development and Finance teams and external consultants to deliver energy production forecasts, layouts, electrical schematics, plant and equipment layouts, system cost estimates, EPC contract technical exhibits, etc. 
  • Contribute to NRG's technology roadmap, software tools, engineering capability and project management processes. 
  • Support the ongoing search for improved system cost and performance by contributing to evaluations of technologies, systems and components, and be a resource regarding emerging regulations, technologies and techniques in the clean energy industry.  

Qualifications 

  • MS in electrical, mechanical, energy engineering, or relevant technical discipline, and 4+ years of PV industry experience. 
  • Alternatively BSEE and 7+ years of directly relevant project experience with evidence of progressive technical responsibility. 
  • Experience in design, engineering and/or construction of commercial (>1 MW) and utility-scale renewable energy projects. 
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of solar energy resources, PV system design, power conversion equipment. 
  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge of relevant NEC and other industry codes and practices. 
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the solar and electric utility industries, energy and environmental policy drivers. 
  • Experience using PVSyst, Helioscope or similar commercial energy modeling programs is highly preferred. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, analytical and quantitative skills. Proficiency in using MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook. 
  • Proven ability to coordinate work flow with project teams and to manage the work of external consultants and contractors. 
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated high achiever with ability to multi-task, perform duties in a collaborative working environment. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel to projects sites (typically 20-30%) and when necessary to work overtime on short notice.
