There is a very good reason why Capitalism has been a vibale ideology in modern times. Advances in technology are adapted in a capitalistic society when the actual cost of implementing a new technology is less than the cost of retaining the technology it will replace. (Read that last sentence again! It is critically important that it is understood.) The only way to accurately determine those costs is in a brutally honest examination by individuals or companies who will invest in the technology as a means to make a profit. They will carefully examine the significance of all the costs of implementing the new technology and its benefits in comparison with the old. If the technology survives this examination and is found to be profitable; it will attract investors and replace the old system. It will have passed the test of having a truly positive EROEI ratio and not one artificially supported by government interference. EROEI is the ratio of usable energy returned over all energy inputs invested in the production of the new energy source.Government interference driven by ideology, the influence of special interests or political pay offs; skew the normal examination process and can lead to the massive waste of tax dollars in pursuing programs that are destined to fail. Recently this exact type of government interference was exposed in the still evolving Solyndra scandal; a scandal that seems to be expanding to even more enterprises backed by government loans.
