Every little bit helps. You wouldn’t think of something as benign as avoiding a left-hand turn could conserve fuel, but Atlanta-based United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) swears by it. In fact, the parcel carrier has technology in its systems that map this out routes that minimize the number of left turns the driver has to make. According to spokesperson Steve Holmes, avoiding left turns at intersections reduces idling which in turn lowers fuel consumption. “It seems small, but when you multiply it across 88,0000 vehicles making nearly 15 million deliveries every day during the course of a year, it adds up.”And at stop lights, making a right turn at an intersection tends to be faster than at a left turn, since you have only to wait for an opportunity to turn in one lane of traffic. These basic research projects will help increase the amount of solar power in the nation’s energy supply and will focus on two technical areas: the conversion of solar energy to electricity and the conversion of solar energy to chemical fuels. Directly converting sunlight to chemical fuels will help overcome the problem of the lack of nighttime solar resource and provide solar-derived energy in forms useful for transportation, residential, and industrial applications. The Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program, a project of the Clinton Climate Initiative, will draw on $5 billion in financing to be provided in equal amounts by five banks: ABN AMRO, Citi, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS. The banks will finance cities and private building owners to undertake energy efficiency retrofits. Four energy service companies – Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, and Trane – will conduct energy audits, perform building retrofits, and guarantee the energy savings of the retrofit projects. RSI Silicon of Westborough, Massachusetts is the winner of this year’s Ignite Clean Energy Business Competition, sponsored by the MIT Enterprise Forum.The company has developed a unique technology to address the critical worldwide shortage of silicon, which affects more than 90% of solar cells made today. While prices of silicon skyrocket and supply from standard sources diminishes, RSI Silicon’s process provides solar grade silicon at a fraction of the current cost, with only 10% of the capital cost. By using this new process, the team expects to compete with large silicon manufacturers and revolutionize the way the material is produced. The team will use the funding to build a pilot line and R&D facility, followed by a large silicon plant to produce up to 15,000 tons per year. RSI will receive $25,000 cash, three months worth of public relations services from Bell Pottinger USA, $15,000 in legal services from Mintz Levin and a choice of one year of office space from Cummings Properties valued at $25,000 or incubator space at the U. The American Wind Energy Association has been working closely with Congress on bills S. 673 and H.R. 1772 that, if passed, would provide a tax credit of $1500 per kilowatt of capacity for small wind systems. The bill also calls for 3-year accelerated depreciation and a credit carry-over for a customer unable to take advantage of the entire credit within a one-year period.There has been no federal support for small wind systems since 1985. Meanwhile, residential solar systems, which serve the same market as small wind, currently receive a 30% investment tax credit.The federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) applies only to large utility-scale wind projects, not to individuals who want to install their own wind systems for on-site power. Federal support would help broaden the small-wind industry on a national scale.There are now two Small Wind Investment Tax Credit bills in Congress – one in the House (H.R. 1772), and one in the Senate (S. 673) – that would provide individuals a tax credit when purchasing small wind turbines for their homes, farms, or small businesses.To become law, these bills must show a broad range of support from Members of Congress.
