Position Overview:
We seek to fill the position of Zion Manager of Sustainability and Risk. As the park concessionaire, Xanterra Parks & Resorts is proud to operate Zion Lodge facilities. We continue to set the standard for ecologically sound parks & resorts that complement, not harm, their natural surroundings.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a written environmental management system consistent with the ISO 14001 environmental standard, as well as NPS standards and audit protocol, working in conjunction with the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability, General Manager, and government agencies.
- Develop and oversee Xanterra's parks operations risk management programs maintaining compliance with federal, state, OSHA and NPS safety rules and regulations. This may include: administering property safety and security systems, including alarm systems, fire suppression, fire prevention, and guest/employee safety; investigating guest and employee accidents and injuries; conducting educational activities for all supervisors and employees; directing internal safety inspections; developing safety committees; implementing a written Hazard Communication program.
- Develop and oversee the structural fire program as required by NPS Concessions contract. Ensure that an effective fire prevention and protection program is in place that meets the standards of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and any federal, state, and local laws.
- Develop, implement and maintain tracking systems of environmental management strategies per EcoLogix by Xanterra.
- Provide oversight, coordination, measurement, and ongoing performance evaluations of the environmental management system and the NPS Concessions Environmental Audit Protocol in coordination with the General Manager, the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability, and the NPS.
- Work with the General Manager and the Xanterra V.P. Sustainability to establish standards for departments in conservation and environmental goals in areas such as energy, water, solid waste, recycling, pollution prevention, transportation, hazardous materials and waste, and procurement.
- Develop, implement and maintain the location recycling program and have direct oversight of the recycling personnel.
- Develop and implement training programs in areas such as environmental stewardship, hazard communication standard, workplace safety, labeling and MSDSs of hazardous chemicals, personal protection procedures, emergency response procedures, and environmental compliance.
- Develop an environmental stewardship committee; hold regularly scheduled meetings and establish goals and objectives for the committee. This committee will foster an environmental ethic and ecological awareness in all Xanterra employees and guests through development and dissemination of educational materials, co-sponsorship with interest groups, and internal and external advocacy.
- Maintain records and reports for compliance with all agencies having jurisdiction, including National Park Service, OSHA, State of Utah, etc.
- Work closely with Xanterra's V.P. Sustainability and General Manager, corporate legal counsel and any consultants to ensure legal compliance with all state and federal environmental statutes and regulations. This includes providing training to staff of regulatory changes affecting operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or related field, plus minimum 2 years professional experience in environmental or conservation management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical writing and public speaking.
- Experience in developing environmental initiatives.
- Experience in environmental report writing including EMS development, ISO 14001 certification, and environmental auditing.
- Proven analytical skills in assessing cost effectiveness, cost savings, program effectiveness and program compliance.
- Well-developed management information systems skills.
