Description

Altaeros Energies is an early-stage company working to bring the first airborne wind turbine to market. Altaeros turbines hold the potential to deliver cheap renewable energy to rural, island, and offshore sites that face high electricity costs.

Founded in 2010 by MIT & Harvard alumni with a background in aerospace, energy, and industrial gases, Altaeros has received seed funding from private investors, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the California Energy Commission, and the Maine Technology Institute. The company also won the 2011 ConocoPhillips Energy Prize. Altaeros Energies is located in the Greentown Labs incubator in Boston, MA.

Position Overview:

Altaeros Energies seeks an engineer to assume a key role in upgrading microelectronics components for its next airborne wind turbine prototypes. These prototypes are intended to demonstrate improved airborne performance over the initial Altaeros proof-of-concept system (see a short demo video).

The engineer will be responsible for integrating a number of control and sensor upgrades into the system architecture. The engineer will also be responsible for assisting the lead controls engineer in making necessary changes to the control software to accommodate system configuration changes. In addition to making system upgrades for near-term flight test prototypes, the engineer will also be responsible for evaluating long-term sensing and control platforms for our team's next larger functional prototype, which will be designed for autonomous and reliable power generation over several continuous weeks of deployment.

Responsibilities:

  • Upgrade control and sensing hardware for small-scale prototype tests
  • Evaluate and upgrade communications and sensing hardware
  • Upgrade software for new control hardware, including interfacing with variable frequency drives over CAN
  • Evaluate sensor technology for our first commercial product

Qualifications:

  • Junior-level, senior-level, or graduate in electrical/computer engineering or a related field
  • Hands-on experience implementing control hardware (sensors, communication networks)
  • Strong programming experience (C, C++, MATLAB/Simulink, Python)
  • Experience with CAN a major plus
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Passionate and fun attitude

Compensation: The internship will last 10 weeks or longer, and compensation will be based on experience. Part-time and full-time internships are available.
