JOB HIGHLIGHTS
The Water and Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (WECL) Technician assists the WECL Manager in providing analytical services supporting land-based aquaculture systems research, engineering, and external consulting work. The WECL technician delivers scientifically verifiable, valid data while adhering to established quality assurance policies and procedures.

- REPORTS TO: Water and Environmental Chemistry Laboratory Manager
- NUMBER OF POSITIONS REPORTING TO THIS POSITION: None
- LOCATION: Shepherdstown, WV
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

- Perform chemical, biological, and physical water and wastewater tests according to standard methods while adhering to QA/QC protocols.
- Conduct sampling on and off-site in accordance with ongoing research and monitoring projects.
- Assist in completing sampling, water quality analysis, data analysis, and reporting for stormwater and facility effluent discharge permits in accordance with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System and other permits.
- Operate and assist in the maintenance of benchtop, field, and other analytical equipment.
- Perform periodic calibration of water quality instrumentation.
- Record and compile laboratory data using manual and computer-based data management systems; assist in preparing analytical reports on operations and activities.
- Properly dispose of hazardous waste generated by the laboratory in accordance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) guidelines.
- Author and update existing laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Collaborate with staff to deliver on research and consulting projects, including authoring or co-authoring scientific articles and reports (internal and external).
WHAT WE NEED YOU TO HAVE
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, or environmental science with demonstrated supporting analytical coursework.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal staff, consultants, regulatory agencies, and equipment vendors.
- Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
WHAT WE’D LIKE YOU TO HAVE
- One year of water chemistry laboratory experience preferred.
- Familiarity with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
- Familiarity with WV DEP laboratory compliance standards of performance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Lifting 30 lbs. from the floor to benchtop height.
- Work is performed primarily in a laboratory setting.
- The noise level in the work environment is moderate (~60 dB).
- Estimated travel – 5%.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $50,000–$60,000, and the position is eligible for opportunities to earn performance-based bonus compensation. Please note: Salary range provided is an estimate and will be evaluated on an individual basis, taking into consideration the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education. The final salary offer will be determined accordingly.
