The Garden pursues its mission through its role as a museum of living plant collections arranged in gardens and landscapes across its National Historic Landmark site; through its comprehensive education programs in horticulture and plant science; and through the wide-ranging research programs of the International Plant Science Center.

Position Overview

The Video Producer oversees, from start-to-finish, the production of original video content for NYBG’s Continuing Education flexible online learning program. They help plan, conceptualize, develop, create, edit, and archive high-quality videos and other digital media assets (both live action and voiceover) in support of NYBG’s mission and education-based initiatives, with daily accountability to the team spearheading the growth of NYBG’s online education program. 

The successful Video Producer is an experienced, innovative, detailed-oriented, and effective storyteller capable of documenting concise, creative approaches to learning, with a strong background in editing and producing content. They ensure that the final videos match the educational needs and brand guidelines set forth for each project. They work closely and cross functionally with both the Education and Marketing teams and can collaborate effectively with various stakeholders including faculty, instructional designers, horticulturists, and scientists. They demonstrate a deep appreciation for educational content and for the experience of the instructors and global learners engaged with NYBG. The Video Producer is a collaborative, creative problem solver who provides constructive options and team approaches to resolve conflicts, works within operating constraints, and identifies priorities for post-production in order to successfully complete assignments and provide effective management of multimedia assets on time and within budgets. 

In addition to editing video content, the Video Producer is responsible for serving several roles on small-scale shoots. These roles include (but are not limited to) videographer, camera operator, gaffer, grip, and production assistant. You must have a background and professional experience in videography or cinematography, as well as experience with operating small-scale film sets. The Video Producer also oversees the work of any contractors hired to support video production for the Continuing Education program. 

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works with NYBG instructors to create high-quality media assets for instructional projects: specifically, course videos (both live action and voiceover), incorporating faculty feedback into each cut.
  • Oversees video production in a professional and timely manner, meeting deadlines consistently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Oversees as needed any on-set filming as a videographer, editor, and general production assistant.
  • Works in collaboration with and under the guidance of the leads of assigned project(s) to ensure the creation and delivery of innovative audio/video solutions that are on time, within budgetary constraints, and appropriate for the particular learning context.
  • Delivers targeted media assets for social media and e-mail marketing, including trailers, cutdowns, and clips, as well as photography as needed.
  • Develops file management and naming procedures for appropriate archiving.
  • Understands and applies established production workflows and practices for planning, set up, creation, post-production, finishing, and archiving media assets.
  • Advises as requested on post-production priorities and workflows.
  • Hires and oversees the work of external vendors as needed, such as supporting editors, videographers, animators, or other consultants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four (4) years of recording and editing experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience as videographer or cinematographer.
  • Fluent in the Adobe Creative Cloud: Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator.
  • Technically skilled at recording audio visual content in both controlled indoor settings and unpredictable outdoor environments.
  • Working knowledge of compositing, motion graphics, and animation.
  • Adept at modern digital video camera systems.
  • Experience with color correction and audio mixing.
  • Experience working on small-scale film sets.
  • Can execute the production of videos at every stage of the project, as needed, incorporating external feedback into each cut.
  • Source supporting images and footage as needed to improve the story.
  • Knowledge of Kaltura or similar content sharing platforms preferred.
  • Experience developing media specifically for viewing in a Learning Management System such as Canvas preferred.
  • Experience creating content for social media platforms.
  • Experience in educational media, education publishing, academic technology, or teaching and learning support preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills: verbally, visually, and in writing.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently to meet ambitious deadlines, as well as to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated project management skills; experience using project management software a plus.

  • Available for short-term travel as needed for special projects
  • Driver’s license preferred.

Compensation

  • Salary is commensurate with experience within the following range: $70,000-$80,000
