Campbell Soup Company has recently articulated a commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a central component of its Strategic Plan, and is seeking a leader and strategist for the newly created position of Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility.

Position Overview

The executive in this role will be responsible for designing an overarching CSR strategy for the Company and for crafting relevant goals, policies and programs. Building on earlier work at the Company, he or she will develop a definition of CSR appropriate to Campbell's business, mission and heritage, and deepen the Company's understanding of the expectations of consumers, customers, employees, investors and the broader society concerning responsible corporate citizenship by a global company in the 21st century. Working closely with Campbell's senior leaders, he or she will lead the effort to fulfill the commitment to CSR in the design and implementation of its business strategies and operational objectives.

The Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility will interact frequently with the Company's Executive Leadership Team and work closely with the leaders of Campbell's businesses and corporate functions to mobilize the organization and collaborate in the development and implementation of CSR policies and programs. A primary accountability of the role will be the development and execution of a plan to identify the environmental impact of the Company's operations and value-creating sustainability initiatives, in areas such as water use, water and waste treatment, energy, packaging, and sourcing and other supply chain issues. Key content areas will also include diversity, corporate governance and community engagement.

The Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility will monitor and apply learning from the programs and practices of other companies in the consumer products industry and beyond, engage with key stakeholders, and represent Campbell in key CSR venues. He or she will also measure and report on the Company's performance against its goals and strategies with respect to CSR, and ensure the implementation of management systems necessary to support its CSR programs.

The position is based at Campbell's corporate headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, and reports to the Senior Vice President -- Law and Government Affairs. Staffing and budget for the role will be determined through the Company's strategic and operating planning processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy and Leadership. Lead the Company's efforts to develop an overarching definition of CSR appropriate for Campbell, and a long-term strategy and framework. Expand and elevate the Company's understanding of the expectations of consumers, customers, employees, investors and the broader society with respect to responsible corporate citizenship. Work closely with the Company's Executive Leadership Team to develop business plans that fulfill these expectations.
  • Best Practices. Advise the Company's leadership on global best practices with respect to CSR. Monitor and analyze the strategies, policies and programs of other Fortune 500 companies, with particular attention to the consumer products industry.
  • Risk/Benefit Analysis. Assist the Company in assessing the societal and business risks and opportunities with respect to CSR. Assess, prioritize, monitor and address potential challenges and risks. Elevate emerging issues where appropriate.
  • Policy and Program Development. In collaboration with key internal stakeholders across Campbell's business units and functions, drive the development and execution of policies and programs that are consistent with the strategic framework and objectives of this program and aligned with Campbell's other business strategies.
  • Goals and Measurement. In collaboration with senior leadership, develop appropriate goals and metrics for measuring the Company's performance with respect to CSR.
  • Reporting. Determine reporting-related organizational goals. Develop processes, infrastructure and schedule for CSR reporting.
  • Stakeholder Engagement. Lead stakeholder engagement for the Company. Build strategic alliances and coalitions with key constituency groups (local, national and international political, social, and environmental leaders) whose work and missions are aligned with Campbell's priorities.
  • Representation. Represent the Company in relevant outside organizations and venues.
  • Business Integration. Develop CSR capabilities within the organization. Educate and link different groups and functions. Ensure the implementation of policies, strategies and programs on a global basis.
  • Communications. Work effectively with the internal and external public relations and communications teams to advance the Company's reputation with respect to CSR. Represent the company in diverse complex and high- profile situations globally.
  • Management. Direct the coordination of enterprise-wide CSR initiatives. Direct specific project management to ensure that CSR programs, initiatives, and related activities are successfully executed. Direct the day-to-day management of CSR processes and programs to ensure that the mission is maximized and resources are used effectively and efficiently.
  • Fiscal Oversight. Through the CSR strategic and operational planning process, develop an understanding of the fiscal impact of the Company's goals and priorities in this area. Develop an annual operating budget.
  • Travel. Approximately 10-20% travel in U.S. and internationally.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a visionary thought and action leader with significant experience in and previous management responsibility for issues and activities related to CSR and reporting in a global corporate setting. A sophisticated understanding of the global CSR landscape and best practices is essential. Critical to success will be a broad proactive mindset, exceptional listening, framing and strategic abilities, and superb skills at creating new possibilities. The candidate must be able to work successfully with large and complex organizations and with people of diverse functional and cultural backgrounds.

Core Qualifications

  • Senior-level, progressive experience managing a CSR program or related program or function.
  • Experience working with and influencing senior company leadership (including the CEO and/or COO) on projects that involve the development of new company-wide policies and programs.
  • Experience as an internal consultant and advisor; the kind of individual who is sought out for his or her advice and perspective.
  • Content expertise in at least two CSR issue areas of importance to the company; e.g., environment, manufacturing and sourcing, supply chain issues, diversity, community involvement, etc.
  • Prior experience in devising and/or implementing a CSR program; e.g., work on strategy, policy development, program development, goal setting, reporting, internal management systems, etc.
  • A sophisticated and deep understanding of today's key global CSR issues and landscape, and the roles of the private, nonprofit and public sectors both in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate trends and issues in business and society that affect the Company's CSR agenda and reputation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives and project teams.
  • Knowledge of business principles from multiple disciplines and the ability to apply these principles in driving change/outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Strong business and financial acumen.
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or advanced degree in relevant field preferred.
