~ Mohonk Preserve is one of America’s largest and most historic private, non-profit nature preserves, protecting and managing over 8,000 acres of the Northern Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County, New York. ~
Thom Scheuer, the beloved Head Ranger of Mohonk Preserve from 1972 until his death in 1999, dedicated his work and life to protecting and maintaining the Preserve as a place for world-class outdoor enjoyment within a high-quality ecosystem. Thom’s timeless legacy is that of land stewardship that involves people in a common land ethic.
To fulfill our mission, the Preserve administers four core programs: land protection, land stewardship, environmental education, and conservation science.
Internship Overview
The 2018 Scheuer Land Management Internship at Mohonk Preserve will provide the successful internship candidate with the opportunity to work directly within our Land Protection and Land Stewardship programs, where they will assist staff and gain experience with:
- General land management activities
- Preserve property line inspection, posting and reporting
- Trail design and/or maintenance
- GPS/GIS applications
- Member & day visitor contact
- Land Protection records maintenance
The intern and his/her supervisor will design a specific land management project that the intern will complete that will include a final written deliverable (e.g. report, maps, design plan, etc.). At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will also be required to make a short oral presentation using PowerPoint to summarize his/her work experience and their specific project.
Compensation: $4,000; housing and travel assistance may be available; Preserve membership for duration of internship.

Who may apply:
- Incoming junior and senior undergraduate college students majoring in Environmental Science, Land and Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Public Safety, Land Planning and/or Landscape Architecture, or other related fields of study (graduating seniors are not eligible).
- Ability to hike a minimum of 7 miles and provide personal gear for the day required (rain gear, appropriate clothing, hiking boots).
- Driver’s license preferred.
