About This Position
Brightworks Sustainability’s Building Materials Practice covers all aspects of materials in the built environment. This includes optimizing material choices to reduce exposure to chemicals of concern, to reduce impacts from embodied carbon, to optimize material selection for end-of-use (circularity) and beyond.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, qualified Materials Analyst to join our team. The Materials Analyst position is involved in modeling, research, analysis, and coordination for our Embodied Carbon and Healthy & Sustainable Materials programs. The position will have a strong emphasis on embodied carbon analysis using life cycle assessment (LCA) and a candidate with strong interest in Whole Building LCA (WBLCA) is desired.
The Materials Analyst role will involve working primarily on varied client projects at the building and portfolio scale, with a focus on performing WBLCA analyses, interpreting the findings, and developing reduction strategies for our clients.
The employee filling this position will work directly with Materials Specialists and senior staff to support project analysis, as well as with project teams and other internal Brightworks’ Practice teams. This position reports to a Materials Specialist and will work closely with Senior-level Technical Specialists and Managers to support our clients in shaping their approach to building materials selection and procurement.
Example Responsibilities
- Review and interpret design models, design drawings, specifications, and submittals
- Check and sort through a Revit model and isolate systems to check the quality for WBLCA use
- Document material quantities, product data, and material details as you move data from Revit to OneClick online
- Select appropriate LCA data and/or EPDs for all materials
- Use OneClick LCA and/or Tally Revit plug in to run the WBLCA
- Evaluate, summarize, and communicate WBLCA results
- Research and recommend potential solutions for reducing a building project’s embodied carbon
Requirements
- Strong interest in developing a focused skillset in the embodied carbon of materials of buildings
- Understands buildings and can efficiently read and pull details from design drawings, specifications, and submittals
- Understands and has experience with the various types of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
- Education, training, or experience in Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Design, or other related disciplines
- Fluency with data management and proficiency in Excel
- Strong communication skills, ie. presentations, graphics, reports, etc.
- High attention to detail and quality of documentation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Revit
- Experience with EC3
- Experience with LEED or ILFI WBLCA credits
- Experience with LCA and/or Tally Revit plug in
- Understands LCA methodology and best practices
- Experience Whole Building LCA scripting
Details
This position may be filled in Brightworks Sustainability’s New York City or Portland, OR office. Other Brightworks Sustainability office locations may be considered.
The salary range for this position in New York City is $75,956 - $102,882. Other office locations may be regionally adjusted.
