OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
The Sustainability Officer communicates and coordinates with employees, management from multiple departments throughout M-DCPS (e.g., Grants, Transportation, Maintenance, Facilities, Information Technology, Food and Nutrition, and Academics), and community partners to address sustainability issues. The Sustainability Officer develops and executes strategies to address issues such as energy use, resource conservation, recycling, pollution reduction, waste elimination, transportation, education and building design. The Sustainability officer also recommends organizational process or policy changes, monitors the implementation of these processes and policies, and reports on the progress, challenges, and next steps required to assist the District in achieving its goal of 100% clean energy.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Leads the District’s eco-sustainable initiatives; establishes a plan to assess its carbon footprint; and makes recommendations on implementation of specific initiatives that will achieve cost efficiencies, are best eco-practices and contribute to the District’s long-term ecological sustainability.
- Collaborates with other District bureaus, including Procurement, Transportation, School Operations and Curriculum and Instruction in the preparation of the District’s sustainability plan and initiatives, to capture their ideas and ensure early buy-in and the best possible results.
- Stays current on federal, state and local legislation related to sustainable practices and programs, and provides leadership in the identification and pursuit of grants, entitlements and other funding opportunities that facilitate the implementation of sustainable, green initiatives. Explores and recommends opportunities to partner with other governmental entities in the implementation of eco-sustainable initiatives, with the objective of augmenting available resources and achieving greater and more rapid cost-efficiencies.
- Develops and implements “Net Zero” and “Clean Energy” marketing campaigns to ensure greater understanding of these terms across the district and to support energy efficiency efforts.
- Works closely with partners from Miami-Dade County to update the Greenhouse Gas Inventory every two years.
- Develops energy conservation and water stewardship plans and policies, and monitors their implementation.
- Works with local, state, and federal legislative leaders to develop policy changes that support clean energy efforts.
- Uses public private partnerships to explore innovative opportunities to access renewable energy.
- Identifies educational, training, or other development opportunities to support sustainability efforts across the District.
- Works closely with the District’s Transportation department to develop and implement plans to support the district’s green initiatives.
- Develops plans to decrease waste diversion to landfills through recycling, composting and source reduction, and monitors the implementation of these plans.
- Works closely with the Division of Academics to implement programs and curricular initiatives that support sustainability education and focus on the importance of conservation and practical ways to reduce resource consumption.
- Reviews sustainability program objectives and directs sustainability program operations to ensure compliance with environmental and governmental policies, standards, regulations, or laws.
- Evaluates and approves proposals for sustainability projects, considering factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and integration with other initiatives.
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of sustainability programs.
- Provides leadership in the development of project proposals, grant applications, or other documents to pursue funding opportunities that facilitate the implementation of sustainable, green initiatives.
- Creates and maintains sustainability program documents, such as schedules and budgets; develops sustainability reports, presentations, or proposals.
- Performs other duties related to the general administrative responsibilities of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Business, Public Administration, Business Administration and Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning or related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
- Five (5) years’ experience in sustainability related planning with a minimum of two years in a managerial capacity with a public entity or a large, decentralized agency or corporation.
- Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGCB) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as a LEED Green Associate or LEED Accredited Professional (AP); or certification as a Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA) or Sustainability Excellence Professional (SEP) from the International Society of Sustainability Professionals preferred, or a plan to achieve certification within two (2) years.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- A valid Florida driver’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. The work is performed primarily indoors and outdoors and requires frequent in-county travel.
COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $127,667-$154,000.
