The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that empowers communities and protects public health and the environment by investigating polluters, holding them accountable under the law, and strengthening public policy.

Comprised of former EPA enforcement attorneys, public interest lawyers, analysts, investigators, and community organizers, EIP has three goals:

  1. To illustrate through objective facts and figures how the failure to enforce or implement environmental laws increases pollution and harms public health;
  2. To hold federal and state agencies, as well as individual corporations, accountable for failing to enforce or comply with environmental laws; and
  3. To help local communities obtain the protections of environmental laws.

Position Overview

EIP is accepting applications for two Staff Attorneys to join our team working to hold industrial polluters accountable for compliance with environmental laws. One Staff Attorney will work to reduce greenhouse gases from a variety of sources, including municipal solid waste landfills and natural gas infrastructure.

This position will focus on national-level advocacy and advocacy addressing pollution sources located in the Mid-Atlantic region. The second Staff Attorney will work to reduce water pollution from industrial polluters. Both attorneys will work with EIP’s team of lawyers and analysts to advance our efforts to reduce air and water pollution through litigation and federal and state administrative permitting and rulemaking processes. 

Responsibilities 

  • Develop and execute legal strategies to reduce pollution.  
  • Perform a range of litigation and legal tasks, including drafting comments, motions, briefs, and other documents to support administrative advocacy and litigation efforts.    
  • Work with internal and external experts to develop the factual, technical, and scientific basis to support EIP’s advocacy efforts.  
  • Represent EIP and other organizations in federal and state litigation and administrative proceedings.  
  • Manage client relationships and work effectively within coalitions.   
  • Draft grant proposals and reports.   

Qualifications 

  • A law degree and active bar membership in good standing.  
  • One to eight years of experience practicing law and experience in environmental law and policy. 
  • Excellent analytical, research, writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Passion for protecting public health and the environment.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners. 
  • Prior experience or demonstrated commitment to working with members of communities directly impacted by pollution.  
  • Strong work ethic, robust problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.
