Description
The National Environmental Law Center (NELC) is a nonprofit environmental litigation center founded by the State Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) to take enforcement action against the nation's worst polluters. On behalf of citizen-plaintiff organizations, NELC obtains court orders to stop illegal discharges of pollutants and secures major penalties against violators of environmental laws. Money from fines and settlements is often directed to local environmental projects in and around affected areas.
NELC's litigation is primarily in federal court. NELC has taken legal action on behalf of individuals and environmental groups in Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Louisiana, and California. Including cases filed by predecessor organizations, NELC attorneys have brought more than 90 cases under the federal Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and Superfund, and won more than $48 million in fines and support for environmental projects. NELC also provides support for other citizen-plaintiff organizations by submitting amicus briefs to the courts when important legal issues concerning environmental protection are involved.
NELC is currently seeking staff attorneys with meaningful litigation experience to be based in the Boston office.
