Description

New York Sun Works is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004. We have a track record of high-visibility projects focused on public demonstration of sustainable food production. Our Science Barge program, a prototype carbon-neutral urban farm featuring a hydroponic greenhouse mounted on a barge, powered by solar panels, and irrigated by rainwater, hosted over 20,000 visitors in Hudson River Park in 2007 and 2008.

Today our primary program is The Greenhouse Project, an initiative dedicated to improving environmental science in urban schools. Through our state of the art hydroponic greenhouse science labs, we aim to provide tomorrow's decision-makers with an elevated set of skills, a broader perspective, and a lasting sense of commitment to lead the global community in an environmentally efficient way. The Sun Work Center for Environmental Studies was the pilot site. Located at Manhattan's PS333 it opened in November of 2010. Since then several new school partnerships have been formed and are in varying stages of development.

In 2011 we launched a successful DOE accredited teacher training program titled "Water, Energy, and Waste: Integrating Themes of Sustainability into Your Classroom" and we are in the process of completing a K-8 curriculum, planned to be published Summer of 2012.

Going forward, our mission involves project stewardship and promotion: fundraising for core program support; guiding schools and other institutions through the development process; designing specialized educational stations and displays; and training teachers.
