Planning Fellowships

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey’s Fellowship Program has two positions available for graduate students to work with our staff for one year, immersed in the field of conservation planning and land preservation.

Candidates will apply their technical skills and educational experience to learn the following:

  • Planning for preservation – Creative analysis based on scientific methods for identifying land suitable for preservation, with an emphasis and local/regional priorities for conservation.
  • Mapping and design – Use programs including ArcGIS, Google maps, Canva, and Adobe InDesign to visualize connections between landscapes and the natural carrying capacity for conservation and development.
  • Public outreach – Develop presentations and accessible outreach materials using Canva and related tools to share detailed information in a format that is understandable and relatable to local residents.
  • Types of projects – GIS modeling for conservation priorities, environmental justice and overburdened communities data to identify project needs, analysis of census tract data, flood risk analysis, business of agriculture and eligibility of farmland for preservation, watershed studies for open space preservation, environmental inventories.

Note: Fellowships are designed for students who have their college degree (preferably their Masters) and are able to commit to a one-year working experience. Work up to 36 hours per week; includes five days of vacation.
