Description

Type: Full time

Salary: DOE

Supervisor: Campaigns Director

Location: San Francisco

Deadline: April 30, 2002

Rainforest Action Network (RAN) works to protect the world's rainforests and the rights of their inhabitants through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action. RAN operates hard-hitting campaigns designed to challenge the U.S. logging industry to end its trade in old growth wood products, get off U.S. public lands, and embrace truly sustainable forestry practices. RAN's Old Growth Campaign eliminates the consumption of wood products derived from the logging of the planet's remaining primary/old growth forests thereby bringing to an end all industrial logging of old growth forests. The campaign galvanizes the public's existing belief that cutting old growth forests to turn them into 2x4's and pulp is simply unethical and that a mature, modern society has outgrown such practices.

RAN's Old Growth Organizer will work as part of a campaign team, and within the old growth organizing team with an additional Old Growth Organizer, the Old Growth Campaigner, Markets Campaigner, and Campaigns Director to change the way business is done in the logging industry.

Responsibilities and Priorities:
· Execute grassroots pressure tactics to move specific old growth campaign targets (eg: Boise Cascade, etc) to establish forest-friendly policies;

· Strengthen RAN campaigns by working with campaign staff to mobilize grassroots activists on key forest and climate change issues;

· Strengthen, broaden, and diversify the network of grassroots indigenous rights, rainforest conservation, and climate change activists and groups;

· Build capacity within the movement and support grassroots efforts with organizing advice, resources, materials, and campaign strategy;

· Co-coordinate the annual Rainforest Action Chautauqua, the annual gathering of climate change and rainforest activists;

· Direct and facilitate regional and national organizing and campaign training sessions;

· Coordinate annually (and as needed) with the old growth campaigns team to design the strategic plan and budget for the Old Growth Campaign;

· Represent RAN at environmental conferences and provide motivation and tools to grassroots constituencies. Act as a public spokesperson for RAN as needed;

· In coordination with the Volunteer and Intern Director, supervise interns and volunteers working on campaign activities, including research, execution of outreach, etc;

· Participate in RAN's organizational planning and training sessions. Share office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe work place;

· Report to Campaigns Director regularly on accomplishments and plans of action.

· Participate in quarterly performance reviews with the Campaigns Director as well as weekly campaign team meetings.

Rainforest Action Network works to protect the Earth's rainforests and support the rights of their inhabitants through grassroots education, organizing, and non-violent direct action.
