Position Overview
CALSTART has an immediate opening for a highly-motivated person to join our team as the Regional Director of our Northeast (NE) operations. This person will oversee CALSTART’s work in the NE and play a key role in managing complex technology projects, developing business opportunities, supporting member companies and representing CALSTART in the Northeast region.
This is an exciting time for building the clean transportation technology industry and in doing so creating new jobs, preventing climate change, and improving air quality. CALSTART currently operates significant programs related to clean truck and buses, as well as electric vehicle infrastructure in the region.
Note: Based in CALSTART’s Brooklyn, New York office, the new NE Regional Director will have a tremendous opportunity to work with our industry and government partners to develop and lead new initiatives, and have a major impact in the region.
From its New York office, CALSTART is currently managing programs to provide clean truck and bus purchases and to grow the market for electric vehicles by getting more employers to offer charging at the workplace. The organization sees significant opportunities to work with its member companies and partners in the Northeast to expand the use of cleaner and lower carbon cars, trucks, buses, and fuels. CALSTART’s current NE Regional Director, who opened the Brooklyn office and partnered with NYSERDA to develop these programs, is moving to California for family reasons and will continue to be part of the CALSTART team.
One of the main activities the successful candidate will undertake is managing and expanding the nationally-recognized New York Truck Voucher Incentive Program (NYT-VIP), funded by NYSERDA.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and significant experience in program management and coordination, client relations, outreach, grant writing and technical assessment. Knowledge of key policy and political leaders in the Northeast would be extremely valuable, as would strong familiarity with utilities, fuel providers and technology developers. We want someone with a passion for CALSTART’s mission and who can see problems as opportunities. Comfortable working with a wide array of stakeholders, the ideal candidate should be able to anticipate and fulfill partner needs, and supports an environment that promotes inclusiveness and team-building.
Responsibilities
The Regional Director will need to be a leader, and able to guide and manage teams toward meaningful action and outcomes. The ideal candidate should have the following experience, skills, knowledge, or attributes:
- Managing programs and establishing relationships;
- A strong “can do” attitude;
- Experience in recruiting and building teams and leading successful proposal efforts;
- The ability to envision new opportunities and turn them into meaningful outcomes;
- Knowledge and awareness of clean transportation technologies;
- Producing high quality reports;
- Highly proficient in organizing and leading meetings that engage stakeholders; and
- A strong presenter before small and large groups.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree with ten (10) or more years of work experience, preferably in the transportation or environmental industries.
- The candidate must work well in a team environment, display personal initiative and be driven by a passion for the clean transportation industry.
- It is essential that the candidate be well organized and have the capability to oversee and manage innovative programs.
- The candidate should be a strong organizer, understand regional political dynamics and demonstrate a high competency level with technologies and technical issues.
- A high degree of proficiency in writing and communications are essential.
- Candidates must have the capability of presenting to and working with diverse stakeholder groups.
- The candidate should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of applications, with a high degree of competence in using spreadsheets.
- The successful applicant would have a willingness and ability to travel in and around the Northeast region to manage, pursue, and develop projects and represent CALSTART.
The following Additional Skills and Experience are highly preferred and will be viewed favorably and provide an advantage:
- A strong network of relevant industry and government contacts in the Northeast.
- Specific knowledge of and expertise with advanced transportation technologies and fuels.
- Knowledge of Life-Cycle Cost Analysis, Financial Analysis, or Economic Modeling.
- Awareness of government funding opportunities.
- An advanced degree.
- Experience managing government contracts and programs.
- Certificate or training in program management.
- Skills in social and online media.
Compensation and Benefits
CALSTART offers a strong compensation package. In addition to a competitive salary, CALSTART currently offers employees a company-paid health plan including dental and vision care. The compensation plan also includes a retirement plan equivalent to 8 percent of the annual salary. CALSTART allows for flexible work hours as appropriate, and provides funding for transit. The organization also has a strong interest in employee growth and skills development.
