The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.
Position Overview:
The intern will support the Communications and Marketing Division with activities and outreach around the inaugural Rainforest Alliance Week from September 19 to 23, 2011. Rainforest Alliance Week is an awareness raising campaign that aims to inspire businesses and consumers, including college students, to embrace sustainability. During this week, we'll motivate our diverse community - of fans, followers, members, donors, students and corporate collaborators - to help spread the word and engage others in this effort.
Reports to: Marketing Coordinator, Communications Division
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities for the intern may include, but are not limited to:
- Help develop, organize and execute an event on his/her campus for Rainforest Alliance Week, which may be replicated on other New York area campuses (or across the nation) this year and in the future
- Plan and initiate outreach to other schools/students encouraging involvement in Rainforest Alliance Week
- Provide support to the marketing staff to create Rainforest Alliance Week materials and messages that appeal to a college audience, including print, online and social media
- Collaborate with marketing staff on additional components of Rainforest Alliance Week as needed
- Collaborate with Campus Outreach intern(s) to ensure Rainforest Alliance Week event(s) and on-going campaigns are coordinated and effective
Qualifications:
- Rising junior or senior, in good standing with his/her university
- Marketing or communications major/minor or demonstrated experience in these fields
- Interest or experience in environmental advocacy; committed to the goals of the Rainforest Alliance
- Ability to work both cooperatively and independently.
- Previous event planning, campus organizing and/or social media marketing experience
- A self-starter, who can think creatively and strategically with the ability to follow through with his/her ideas
- Strong communications skills, both written and verbally, and a professional, poised demeanor are a must.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship
Minimum commitment: Minimum of 3 months; 10 - 15 hours a week Start & End Date: June (flexible) through September (must be available through Sept. 23)
