The Mission of Montana Audubon is to promote appreciation, knowledge, and conservation of native birds, other wildlife, and their habitats. Founded in 1976, Montana Audubon has built effective programs in public policy, education, and bird conservation to serve its members and Montana's nine community-based Audubon Chapters.

The Audubon Conservation Education Center is a place of learning, reflection, research and restoration. The Center engages people in the natural world, instills in them an appreciation of nature, and inspires participants to act for the betterment of wildlife and natural habitats.

Position Overview:

The Land Stewardship Coordinator will be responsible for managing a 54-acre restoration/demonstration site.

This position is full-time, permanent, and exempt.

Responsibilities:

1. Fundraising and Development (5%)

  • Establish funding sources to support restoration, interpretation and maintenance of the center grounds.

2. Planning (5%)

  • Work with Yellowstone County, the City of Billings, the Yellowstone River Parks Association, and other partners to develop an integrated, long-range land management plan for the Center property.
  • Work with the Center Director and Advisory Council committees to develop restoration and land management plans for the 54 acres.
  • Manage capital improvement projects, including major restoration and landscaping efforts.

3. Program Development and Implementation (10%)

  • Recruit and manage an effective group of volunteers.
  • Work with Education Director to develop an onsite stewardship program.
  • Facilitate restoration work by engaging volunteer school and community groups.

4. Administration, and Office and Financial Management (5%)

  • Develop and manage the restoration project budget

5. Land Management/Building Maintenance (70%)

  • Manage layout and construction of trails and other supporting features as necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain trails, anticipating and remedying deterioration and possible safety problems to provide for customer needs.
  • Manage restoration efforts including: planning, planting, irrigation, noxious weed removal, and pond maintenance.
  • Conduct small building maintenance tasks and upkeep throughout the year.

6. Working Together to Strengthen MT Audubon (5%)

  • Support, communicate and coordinate with other staff members as appropriate. Take the initiative to learn about all other staff members' work and responsibilities. Actively strive to build a cohesive staff team.
  • Be able and willing to represent the full breadth of Montana Audubon's mission and work to the public.
  • Always look for and engage potential donors, volunteers, partner organizations and other supporters. Keep lists and share information with other staff as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Land Stewardship Coordinator will oversee all restoration volunteers and interns at the Center. The Land Stewardship Coordinator will report to the Center Director.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include: bachelor's degree in botany, background in environmental restoration, ecology or similar subject, at least 2 years experience conducting restoration work with some experience managing volunteers and teaching the public.

Compensation: $32,000-$42,000 plus benefits.
