Description

~ Big Sur Land Trust’s mission is to inspire love of land across generations, conservation of our unique Monterey County landscapes, and access to outdoor experiences for all. ~

Big Sur Land Trust needs passionate people with diverse knowledge and skills to share in the work of conserving and restoring land and caring for the infrastructure that serves our local communities. Spend a moment to reflect on the experiences, relationships, and stories that inspired your appreciation for outdoor places.

What was it that strengthened your resolve to ensure that these places are healthy and resilient so that the local community can depend on them now and in the future, despite significant environmental threats? What is it at your core that drives you to achieve meaningful, tangible results to this end? The Land Steward position may be your opportunity to contribute your unique insights and talents to the strategies of an organization that shares your passion for caring for the land.

Position Overview

Do you love adventure? Are you willing to learn, try new things, and be resourceful? If so, here’s what you would experience in this dynamic Land Steward job.

  • While working with a dedicated team on a variety of innovative and strategic projects, on any given day you might be planting native plants in a restoration site, removing barriers to wildlife movement, working with a rancher to improve soil health, or maintaining a native garden demonstration site for a future park.
  • Additionally, you might focus on keeping our buildings, roads, and trails in good repair; reducing the risk of wildfire; and controlling invasive weeds.
  • Sometimes you’d be in the field doing the physical labor to achieve a goal and other times you’d be working out of our Monterey-based office to help coordinate schedules, develop contracts, join in collaborative discussions with other teams, communicate plans, make maps or create budgets.
  • Generally, you would concentrate your efforts on what we call our “flagship” properties, which include working ranches, pristine redwood forests, coastal mountains and streams, Monterey Bay dunes, urban properties and much more.
  • Additionally, you would ensure that the conservation values of 35 landowner agreements on private lands throughout Monterey County are protected through annual monitoring visits and coordination with landowners.

Your Background

  • The needs of our programs and challenges facing the properties create diverse tasks. Knowing how to do every aspect of this job is not necessary. We will work together to train and identify your strengths, areas for growth, and ways to maximize the innovation and experience of our team.
  • It is therefore more important to have strong communication, organization and interpersonal skills and a good attitude, so that we can work well as a unit to get the job done.

Our Culture

  • At Big Sur Land Trust, we strive to sustain the highest level of employee satisfaction, engagement, and a culture of trust, respect and inclusion.
  • We actively work to ensure a positive team environment where individuals are comfortable with expressing diverse views and opinions and sharing power and responsibility for BSLT’s mission.
