The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), has an immediate opening for an advocate to work with its International Program in our Washington DC office.
NRDC is a non-profit national environmental organization with over one million Members and online activists. Its staff includes attorneys, scientists, policy analysts and educators who are working together to save wilderness and wildlife and to protect public health through advocacy and activism.
The International Program advocate position will work on NRDC's global environmental advocacy and Canadian wildlands protection project.
The global environmental advocacy will include assisting the International Program Director with the Earth Legacy campaign and other efforts to promote U.S. international environmental leadership. The advocate will coordinate a coalition of environmental and foreign policy groups that have been promoting a national debate on the state of the global environment and implications for U.S. policy. The new hire will also engage in advocacy with the U.S. Government and international agencies on key selected issues.
The Canada wildlands protection project will include assisting the Project Director with a series of corporate campaigns focused on U.S. consumption of Canadian natural resources, in particular in the Canadian Rockies.
The advocate will conduct policy and corporate research and analysis, work with environmental and other interest groups working on the same issue and will occasionally represent NRDC in meetings with government or industry. The position will assist with media and communications work and will be expected to participate in fundraising efforts. The advocate will be expected to develop his or her knowledge about the issue areas and possess excellent advocacy skills, including communications, coalition participation, lobbying, and work with NRDC membership.
The position requires at least a BA, but MA and JDs are also welcome to apply. It also requires 1-3 years international environmental policy and/or advocacy, U.S. legislative or other relevant experience. The successful applicant will also possess outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communications skills, and the ability to manage and prioritize a heavy workload while working as a member of a team.
