Description

Seeking individuals with science degree (marine biology / marine science preferred but not required) as well as upper-level undergraduates with science majors. Especially interested in marine students and retired teachers.

Type of Work:

Temporary, part-time (between 10 and 30+ hours a week depending on applicant's schedule and qualifications). Most of the work would take place in Fall and Spring.

Work Location:

Cruises are out of Beaufort (Cape Lookout region) and Carolina Beach (Wilmington - Cape Fear region) North Carolina.

Position:

Environmental educator. The individuals chosen for these positions would be teaching school groups (grades 2 - 12) about marine science during cruises aboard a 65 foot - 85 foot boats.

Trips would consist of explorations of Shackleford Banks, Cape Lookout, Masonboro Island, and ocean reefs. Activities include seining, clamming, rod/reel fishing, pulling trawls, dredges, crab pots, fish traps etc.

Educators' job would be to provide interpretation of what we collect and observe and to lead discussion of natural history of areas we visit.

Skill / Experience Sought in Applicant:

Applicants should have keen interest in marine science and enjoy sharing the wonder of science with others. Experience as an educator is helpful but not necessary. Punctuality is essential.
