The Well School, a K-8 day school in Peterborough, NH, is seeking a farm manager for the 2013 season and beyond.
The Farm at the Well is a small, diversified farm adjacent to the grounds of the Well School. Its aim is to provide sustainable food for its community, offer an experiential "hands-on," out-door science laboratory, and to educate the school community on sustainability and small-scale food production.
The farm grows veggies, animals, and fruits. There is a 1+ acre vegetable field with a 30' x 48' greenhouse, a barn, a few goats, a llama, and approximately 50 layer hens. Feeder pigs are raised seasonally. There is also a young (5 years) orchard that contains apple, pear, peach, and cherry trees. The farm practices and is committed to sustainable and organic practices, but is not certified organic. The farm mainly supplies food to the school's lunch kitchen and to its 10-member CSA.
Position Overview:
The position begins in March and includes a transitional period with the outgoing farm manager. This is a full-time, year-round position with salary and benefits. The farm manager works under the school's director and is responsible for managing the farm and CSA, coordinating with kitchen management on food plans, and working with teachers to continue to develop farm-related curriculum.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities of the farm manager include:
- Developing a crop plan with the school kitchen and CSA in mind
- Soil management
- Greenhouse management
- Bed preparation
- Vegetable propagation, transplanting, cultivation, and harvest
- Weed and pest control
- Livestock & pasture management
- Orchard management
- Overseeing CSA membership and distribution
- Managing the budget
- Hiring and supervising apprentices
- Coordinating with the school kitchen
- Coordinating with teachers on farm-based curriculum
- Teaching farm-based science during the off-season months
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has:
- Minimum of 2 years vegetable experience, management a plus
- Livestock experience
- Orchard experience
- Basic word processing and spread sheet skills
- Tractor and machinery operation and maintenance ability
- Experience working with children
- A background check will be required
