Description
The South Shore Natural Science Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the natural and cultural environments of the South Shore. Our mission is to provide natural science experiences that educate, excite, and commit every generation to preserve the environment and to encourage responsible use, stewardship and enjoyment of our natural resources. The South Shore Natural Science Center is located on 30 acres surrounded by 200 acres of town conservation/recreation land consisting of meadows, woodland, and a pond. We welcome visitors year round.
Position Overview:
Oversee the Center and all its functions according to Association policies. Work with staff and branch board to ensure a fiscally sound operation with quality programs and services for both members and the community at large.
Responsibilities:
- Develop as well as manage the budget as approved in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Develop annual plan of environmental programs and member services for the center that is consistent with community needs.
- Employ, supervise, set goals and appraise staff to effectively manage the center.
- Direct and ensure the success of the Annual Support Campaign for the center.
- Recruit and develop a Board and oversee the development of a volunteer force that is consistent with the needs of the center.
- Provide facilities and grounds for members that are clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive.
- Develop a facility management plan for the center and implement as approved.
- Participate actively in community affairs.
- Actively participate as a member of the Senior Management Team of the Association.
- Implement the Association's Strategic Plan as it relates to the center.
Effect on End Results:
The Executive Director has a primary impact on the overall effectiveness with which the center accomplishes its goals and objectives through programs and services to the community. Performance will be successful when:
- The YMCA and Science Center's mission are communicated in a positive and effective way to the communities it serves.
- The sound administration of responsive and effective programs and services as evidenced by meeting budget expectations and growth in program and membership participation.
- The growth and development of effective staff and the development of strong committed volunteers.
- The center's financial development plan is met or exceeded
- The demonstration of competence, good judgment and follow through within the operation of the center.
Qualifications:
- Specialized, Technical or Practical Know-How: Minimum Bachelor's degree. 5-10 years of operational experience including executive director/management experience in a Natural Science Center or equivalent organization.
- Human Relations Skills: The ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, members, community leaders and other agencies is crucial to this position.
- Managerial Skills: Demonstrated experience in budget development and management, staff and volunteer development, planning, facility management, community development and fundraising are critical to this position.
