Description

Founded in 1962, Audubon Canyon Ranch (ACR) has preserved approximately 2,000 acres of environmentally significant land in Northern California's Marin and Sonoma Counties as wildlife sanctuaries, centers for nature education and conservation-based research.

Each year, ACR staff and volunteers inspire thousands of visiting students and families to love and respect nature, and better understand the need to protect our natural heritage. ACR is an independent non-profit 501(c)3 organization with a staff of 20 and an annual budget of over $2 million.

"Audubon Canyon Ranch protects the natural resources of its sanctuaries while fostering an understanding and appreciation of these environments. We educate children and adults, promote ecological literacy that is grounded in direct experience, and conduct research and restoration that advances conservation science."

ACR's properties include the headquarters at Bolinas Lagoon Preserve in Stinson Beach, home to one of the Bay Area's largest Great Blue Heron and Great Egret nesting sites; the Cypress Grove Research Center and protected properties on Tomales Bay; and the Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen, which safeguards a portion of the Stuart Creek watershed. Each of the 3 major sanctuaries includes habitat for native plants and animals. The facilities include education centers, administrative offices and residences. The Bolinas Lagoon Preserve is a recognized Natural National Landmark. Recently, Audubon Canyon Ranch has signed a collaborative agreement with Jim and Shirley Modini to acquire the 1,725-acre Modini Ranch property through a planned giving arrangement.

ACR's programs are made possible thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, income from its endowment funds, and gifts from individuals, foundations and businesses. ACR has an affiliation with 4 Bay Area Audubon Chapters and is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society. ACR is financially strong with a substantial endowment.
