The Green Electronics Council (GEC) is a program of the International Sustainable Development Foundation (ISDF), which is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization formed in 1997 and based in Portland, Oregon. ISDF's mission is to advance the understanding and practice of sustainability locally and internationally by setting standards for sustainable development and building capacity to achieve it . GEC's mission is to redesign society's relationship with electronics.  GEC manages EPEAT, the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool.  This position would be an employee of ISDF/GEC assigned full time to EPEAT.

Position Overview: 

The, Green Electronics Council which manages the EPEAT system for assessing the environmental attributes of electronic products is seeking a person who is experienced with electronic product environmental requirements and is interested in using that experience to help run a program that rewards manufacturers for environmentally preferable products.  This person will play a key role in supporting manufacturers as they make product declarations on the EPEAT Registry and in ensuring the ongoing credibility and accuracy of that Registry.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond precisely and consistently to inquiries from manufacturers regarding EPEAT and the IEEE 1680 Standard;
  • Support manufacturers who are new to EPEAT by reviewing their initial product declarations to the Registry;
  • Conduct regular reviews of Registry declarations and work to resolve any issues;
  • Support independent contract investigators as they verify product conformance;
  • Conduct surveillance of EPEAT participating manufacturers' EPEAT-related environmental claims in the marketplace;
  • Possibly support standards working groups by seeking out and presenting available information and research relative to environmental attributes of electronic products;
  • Participate in environmental research projects conducted by GEC;
  • Assist in the development and delivery of EPEAT conformance training.

Qualifications:

  • Preferably a masters degree in a technical field such as engineering or environmental science, though this can be substituted with experience
  • Preferably 5-10 years experience working for or with the electronics industry related to product design, environmental management or supply chain management;
  • Work practices that demonstrate thoroughness, precision and creativity;
  • Dedication to delivering high quality, well-organized work products;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Availability for moderate amounts of travel.

Required Experience:

  • Experience with the legal and market-based environmental requirements related to electronic products worldwide.
  • Experience with, and understanding of, diverse interests and perspective of stakeholders on environmental issues;
  • Experience with and ability to manage dialogue around sensitive issues;
  • Experience with the management of complex programs and projects.

Preferable Experience:

  • Experience with industry standards and standard-setting processes;
  • Experience with electronics eco-labels and their requirements;
  • Experience with common analytical test methods and their capabilities and limitations;
  • Database development and management;
  • Website development and/or maintenance.

Note: Applicants are expected to have familiarized themselves with the materials regarding the IEEE standard, the product declaration process and product verification.
