Overview of Position
The Environmental Educator/Resident Camp Staff position is a short-term educator position that supports Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania’s (ASWP) partnership with the Fox Chapel Area School District (FCASD). The program rents the location of Camp Allegheny in Stoystown, Pennsylvania in the beautiful Laurel Highlands/Allegheny Mountain area of Somerset County. Educators work outdoors with small groups of fifth-grade students, their teachers, and high school students who serve as camp counselors. This residential camp program is a core part of the FCASD fifth-grade Science and Social Studies curricula.
Employment Period: October 1 until October 31, 2024. Room and board provided onsite throughout employment period. Most weekends off.
Responsibilities
Educator duties include:
- Leading engaging environmental education lessons and activities in mainly outdoor/trail settings
- Helping to train and mentor high school students serving as camp counselors
- Leading campfires, and group activities/games
- Supervising student daily routines, and managing program materials and supplies
- Maintaining a positive, safe and healthy experience for all participants.
Qualifications
Required:
- Employment contingent on obtaining background clearances as required by the state of Pennsylvania (fees reimbursed)
- Degree in environmental or outdoor education, environmental studies, natural sciences, education or related field, or prior relevant experience
- Willingness to work outdoors in a rural/natural setting in varying weather conditions
- Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills
- Positive, flexible and creative attitude
- Ability to work well with all ages (upper elementary, high school, adult) and in teams
- Knowledge of, or interest in ecology and regional history
- Must enjoy autumn in the Laurel Highlands on Allegheny Mountain!
Preferred but not required:
- First Aid/CPR (if not current, training will be provided)
Additional Details
- Employment term includes one week of training/prep work, 3 weeks of camp. Most weekends off. Room and board provided onsite throughout the term.
Compensation
- $3,500 for the term. Additional compensation available for cabin supervision duties.
