Job Summary

The Environmental Director is responsible for the administration of EPA grants, and leads an Environmental team to execute on projects and initiatives that ensure the Environmental goals for the Fort Independence Indian Paiute Tribe are fulfilled.

  • Schedule: Full-time, may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call. Overtime eligible

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and work to develop and retain highly competent, service-oriented staff through selection, compensation, training, and day-to-day management practices that support the mission, objectives, and service expectations. Provide leadership and participate in programs and activities that promote workplace diversity and a positive employee relations environment.
  • Manage, oversee, and participate in performing environmental field investigative and compliance work and special studies requiring an elevated level of technical expertise and knowledge; plans, organizes and manages site environmental assessments and field investigations; plans, manages, directs field sampling programs.
  • Develop and manage consultant contracts; oversees work of consultants to ensure contract terms are met; monitor work programs and schedules to ensure timely project completion; review and approves invoices.
  • Recommend, develop, and ensure implementation of water quality related projects to include water quality standards, non-point source activities, wellhead protection activities, tribal ordinances/policies/standards, and environmental permitting.
  • Develop and oversee EPA grant funding requirements including, but not limited to budgets, work plans, grant proposals.
  • Build and foster relationships through community outreach, attend community meetings, public hearings and conduct environmental workshops.
  • Summarizes information collected and presents data to upper management.
  • Oversee administration of North 40 Recycling Program
  • May be required to perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Environment, Sustainability, Hydrology, Engineering, Business Administration or a closely related field and 2-4 years of relevant job experience.
  • Current driver’s license with clean driving record and ability to be insured.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for prolonged periods of time and safely lift to 30 pounds. Will be exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call.
  • Pass the pre-employment screening process that includes an extensive background check and drug test

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively at multiple levels in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to engage and speak in public to community leaders, residents in a professional and concise manner.
  • Ability to use computer programs and software for maintaining water quality database information, mapping information and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to analyze problems and suggest solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of research methodologies and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with tribal laws and strong knowledge of state and state, and federal environmental laws and regulations.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and prepare narrative reports.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships with the Community, co-workers, and Tribal members
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in the workplace.
