BuildingGreen, LLC is an independent company committed to providing accurate, unbiased, and timely information designed to help building-industry professionals and policy makers improve the environmental performance, and reduce the adverse impacts, of buildings.
Position Overview:
BuildingGreen, based in Brattleboro, VT, is seeking a full-time editor to join the nation’s oldest and most respected publisher of green building information. The right candidate must be completely comfortable with complex technical information, have at least 3 years of professional writing and editing experience, and have good knowledge of green building technologies and strategies.
Responsibilities:
Writing:
- Research and write articles for both print and online publications
- Research and write brief promotional project profiles of LEED projects (includes obtaining images and key performance data).
- Compile detailed case studies of green projects in DOE’s High Performance Buildings Database.
- Contribute to Blog with timely, engaging, informalpieces
Editing:
- Edit articles written by others, variously for content and grammar.
- Copy edit to ensure consistency with style guide and catch typos.
- Edit technical reports and white papers.
- Package articles and other content with headlines, pull-quotes, and other devices to draw readers in.
- Edit detailed HPB database case studies submitted by others. Editorial tasks include: removing redundant content, correcting spelling and grammar, reorganizing content to fit the database template, checking that data is within reasonable ranges, and assigning green strategies based on narratives.
Online Presentation:
- Organize web pages to highlight most useful content and frame it effectively using a content management system.
- Categorize articles and other content by green strategy, LEED credit, and MasterFormat section.
Qualifications:
Can you explain the difference between a kilowatt and a kilowatt-hour? Know the difference between a hanging indent and a hanging participle? Do you have professional experience in taking a jumble of technical jargon and calculations and turning it into clear, concise Web content? Does a passion for sustainable building--and a low tolerance for hype--come along with those skills?

2. Professional experience editing, web experience strongly preferred
3. Other stuff:
- Critical thinking
- Organization
- Communication (on phone and in writing)
- Knowledge of non-residential design and construction practices
- Knowledge of green technologies and strategies
- Skill with online presentation of information
- Computer facility (including light tagging of content and use of online content sharing systems)
- Willingness to travel to events and meetings (not more than monthly, on average)
