The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a national trade association representing the world's leading chemical and plastics manufacturers, currently has an opportunity for Director, Sustainability for its Responsible Care Department. ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry's research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry's environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative. The position reports directly to the Managing Director of Responsible Care.
Responsibilities:
The position is responsible for designing and executing all facets of sustainability within the Responsible Care department, including serving as the primary point of contact for sustainability programs, and providing external outreach for sustainability issues.
The position will also provide strategic analysis and guidance, relative to sustainability, through avenues such as the strategic review process; determine the feasibility of expanding key Responsible Care concepts; coordinate comprehensive sustainability efforts and outreach activities throughout the ACC, including expanding visibility of ACC sustainability programs both internally and externally; develop and promote sustainability messaging, working with ACC communications department; build ACC's sustainability portfolio, including synthesizing activities in select departments; support ACC advocacy efforts by providing collaborative leadership on sustainability functions and value statements; collaborate with and market to retailers, socially responsible investment firms, underwriters and developers of sustainability scorecards/indices on behalf of the chemical industry; and participate in Wal-Mart's Sustainability Consortia in order to assist in the development of their supplier scoring system.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in public policy, government, science/engineering or related degree, at least 10 years work experience, 5 years' experience in a sustainability (e.g., environmental/corporate/social responsibility) related field and 2 years' experience in chemical or related industry; strong written and oral communications skills as well as the ability to give internal and public presentations; and the ability to work independently on a variety of complex matters simultaneously and design strategy, direction and action plans.
