About The Role The Director of Systems Change and Learning will lead strategy facilitation and learning processes that maximize the impact of Sequoia’s grantmaking. This role will integrate expertise from across disciplines, including hard and soft systems thinking, individual and organizational learning theory, and the mental models that underpin systemic theories of change and action. The Director of Systems Change and Learning will provide facilitation support to Sequoia’s grantmaking teams during strategy development processes (including facilitating systems mapping and iterative development of theories of change and action), as well as lead Sequoia’s in-house learning agenda. This agenda will provide the unifying framework for both emergent learning and evaluative inquiry by Sequoia staff and our partners. The Director of Systems Change and Learning will report to the Chief Evidence and Learning Officer and collaborate closely with Sequoia’s Evidence and Learning and Programmatic teams.

Key Responsibilities
- Leads the iterative development of facilitated strategy processes (and templates) that interweaves complex systems thinking with quantitative analysis on speed, scale, likelihood of success and cost of greenhouse gas emissions (led by other Evidence and Learning staff).
- Leads the development and implementation of an organizational learning agenda for Sequoia, focused on creating the practices and processes necessary to deliver credible and salient insights to our grantmaking staff, grantees, and partner organizations.
- Integrates relevant theories and mental models of change into theories of change and action.
- Provides capacity building support to Sequoia staff to engage in key learning behaviors, including (but not limited to) strategic reflection calls with grantees, periodic pause–and–reflect practices, and the development of emergent learning agendas.
- Builds and maintains an external network to remain up to date on advances in the application of systems thinking, organizational learning to support the development of high ambition, highly leveraged strategies for climate action.
- Fosters a culture of iterative experimentation and learning among Sequoia staff and our partner organizations.
- Represents Sequoia Climate Foundation at conferences and meetings with NGOs, funders, experts, and consultants, ensuring follow–up as needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Graduate Degree in science, engineering, mathematics, politics, or economics required.
- A minimum of 10 years working in strategy development, systems change, or organizational learning roles required.
- A minimum of 3 years on climate change mitigation or other sustainability issues required.
- Experience with implementing complex systems frameworks (and associated tools) to underpin strategy is required.
- Experience with design and implementation of learning process, practices and frameworks required.
- Ability to integrate qualitative and quantitative insights required.
- Knowledge of relevant theoretical frameworks (i.e., mental models, logic models) that underpin policy change and social change efforts.
Compensation & Location
$213,000 – $298,000 annually. Sequoia Climate Foundation offers a generous benefits package and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. We provide competitive wages, health insurance, paid time off, and other perks to promote work/life harmony. We operate in a hybrid model, which means both workdays from home and in the office for our Irvine, California location. The expectation is this role will be our beautiful office at least three days a week (though never five, lots of opportunities to still work remotely a few days a week). We can be flexible on relocation timelines and offer a small amount of relocation assistance.
