Description
Hale Reservation is a private, non-profit educational organization that manages over 1,100 acres of woodlands, including four ponds and over twenty miles of trails in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Hale is most widely recognized for its summer day camp programs which annual serve over 4,400 children from over 70 communities in the Greater Boston area. In addition, Hale's operations consist of a family beach program, outdoor environmental education for children and adults, and open space for casual recreational use.
The essence of Hale Reservation can be found in Robert Sever Hale's original desires for the organization he began in 1918. The current programs and land management practices are the legacy of his desire "to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens" and to use the land "so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature." Today's programs strive to develop intelligent leaders and educated environmental citizens. We also believe that the diversity of the natural environment must be reflected back in the diversity of the people who experience our programs. Therefore, we strive to provide programs and opportunities, for people of any race, background, religion or economic status.
General Program Information:
Hale Reservation has continued to expand its programming and influence during the past 5-10 years. The goal to reach more constituents and expand our ability to fundraise has been successful. In the past three years new camps have been established, our year-round education program has increased by almost 30%, and we completed a $2,000,000 capital campaign. These are initial efforts required to continue to achieve the goals of the organization.
In 2011, the Board of Directors worked on re-establishing Hale Reservation's Master Plan. It contains lofty objectives for the organization that include more new programs and land preservation efforts. In order to successfully achieve these goals there needs to be more oversight and management for the day-to-day operations of the organization, thus the commitment to hire a Director of Operations / Associate Director. The individual in this job will essentially manage the year-round staff and the operations of the organization.
Responsibilities:
This position is designed to have oversight of the ongoing operations of the organization. This includes supervision of staff, planning for upcoming programs, insuring the facilities are ready for programs, overseeing the operations of the office, and working with the Executive Director to make sure Hale continues to further its objectives. While there will be close contact with the Executive Director, it is intended that this position will take over the day-to-day management of a growing, dynamic non-profit organization.
Qualifications:
- Genuine appreciation for Hale Reservation's mission
- Minimum of 5 years experience managing a multi-dimensional organization or programs
- Experience with budgets, marketing, program development and implementation
- Experience managing year-round staff
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
