Background:
The New England Aquarium, opened in 1969, is one of the regions premier
cultural organizations and a leader among aquaria worldwide. As the first
modern aquarium, NEAq is known for its outstanding habitat-based live animal
exhibits, engaging hands-on science education programs, and worldwide
conservation and research initiatives on behalf of aquatic creatures and
habitats.
Duties:
The New England Aquarium is seeking an energetic and experienced
professional to provide educational leadership; development, delivery and
evaluation of programs reaching over 1.5 million Aquarium visitors, youth, and
community members; planning and tracking of $1.4 million annual budget;
and supervision and professional development for 25 FTE staff and over 150
volunteers. This position works closely with other departments including
Conservation, Research, Animal Husbandry, Design and Exhibits, Marketing,
Development, and Visitor Services.
Qualifications:
The Director of Education position requires a minimum of five to seven years
of experience in informal science education, as well as demonstrated ability to
manage staff, build teams, and manage projects and budgets. Excellent
interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential.
Environmental teaching experience and expertise in marine science are highly
desirable. Significant experience in working with diverse racial/socioeconomic
populations is preferred. An advanced degree in aquatic science or education
is required.
