Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (SCCi), a unique and thriving regional land trust, seeks a visionary Director of Conservation who will help to usher our conservation efforts to the next level.

SCCi protects and preserves caves through conservation, education, and recreation. SCCi is the world’s largest land conservancy focused solely on protecting caves and karst environments. SCCi protects 170+ caves on 37 preserves in 7 states. When caves are safeguarded, fragile ecosystems are protected, historic artifacts are preserved, and endangered species thrive. We are hiring a Director of Conservation to spearhead our conservation, stewardship, and land management efforts. Prior caving experience is not required. This new hire will report directly to the Executive Director, and will collaborate with our volunteer preserve managers who oversee each of the Conservancy’s preserves. This person will also develop and manage other volunteer efforts in support of preserve management activities.  This position is based in the Chattanooga, TN area. Director of Conservation Responsibilities

Ensures volunteer Preserve Managers have the tools, information and resources to successfully implement preserve management plans Prepares and updates Preserve Management Plans Identifies needs, plans, prepare budgets, and implements large scale special projects at preserves Develops annual preserve operations budget Manage and oversee Land Steward position Manages changes and improvements to Online Permit System for managing visitation Engages with visitors and potential visitors regarding preserve visitation Helps manage SCCi risk associated with preserve visitation and use Supports Vice-Chair in management of Special Use Permits Identifies and secure partnerships for research and other projects Organizes annual Preserve Management Retreat and other information-sharing meetings and special events Supports Executive Director in other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate must be a team player with the ability to solve problems, and manage both people and projects. They will have excellent people skills with an emphasis on customer service, including excellent verbal and written communication skills. They will have good organizational abilities and attention to detail. Key skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite, and a willingness and ability to learn. Candidates must have a strong science background, with a college degree in an environment-related field (e.g., biology, geology, environmental science, etc.). Additional relevant education and/or experience is desirable.

Compensation

  • $50,000 - $54,000 salary
