The Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Shareholders
Alliance is a 501c6 trade organization comprised of commercial fishermen throughout the Gulf of Mexico who have come together to unify and strengthen the fishing industry and achieve sustainability and accountability of our Gulf fisheries. Our members strive to conserve fish by reducing bycatch, protecting the marine environment, improving safety measures and enhancing economic value.

Position Overview:
The
Shareholders Alliance seeks a skilled individual with demonstrated ability to
successfully manage complex projects, program budgets and engage diverse
partners ranging from the fishery industry to ocean conservation advocates.
The
successful candidate will bring the motivation, energy and focus necessary to
support the advancement of program objectives, and combine exceptional
communication, management and leadership skills in order to establish a
results-oriented culture that combines corporate, non-governmental and fishery
industry interests. The Deputy Director will report to the Shareholders’
Alliance Executive Director and Board of Directors, and work closely with the
staff of Gulf Wild to define and achieve the programmatic and organizational
goals of both organizations.
Responsibiliies:
Operations
and Management
- Engage,
develop, and communicate with Board of Directors. - In concert
with development personnel, create and implement a fundraising strategy that
increases membership and leverages new funding sources. - Develop
action and implementation plans and timelines for priorities outlined in
Strategic Plan document. - Monitor
financial and program performance versus goals outlined in Strategic Plan. - Establish
a results-oriented organizational culture. - Oversee
day-to-day operations of the Alliance.
Policy
Analysis and Planning
- Provide
policy analyses and strategy regarding key fisheries issues in the Gulf of
Mexico both on a regional and legislative scale. - Effectively
leverage key fishermen and other stakeholders’ voices with Council members,
Congressional representatives, commission members, state and federal agencies
executives and other key decision makers in effort to meet the organizations
objectives.
Member
Engagement and Development
- Manage
member recruitment, including accountability to development objectives, in
coordination with other staff and Board. - In
coordination with other Alliance personnel and contractors, manage member
communications, using newsletters, website updates and other tools to promote
and support membership engagement.
Advocacy and
Outreach
- In
cooperation with Executive Director, Board, partners and contractors, identify
strategic priorities and develop and communicate Council, legislative and NOAA
advocacy strategies. - Draft position
statements, comment letters, written and oral testimony and other products as
needed. - Monitor
regional and national policy developments and current issues in fisheries
science and management. - Provide
educational briefings to Gulf of Mexico fishermen.
Qualifications:
An ideal
candidate will bring the following professional experience and personal
characteristics to the position:
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 6
years of
professional experience in natural resource related program management and/or
policy work. - Significant organizational or program management experience, including
performance measurement, strategic planning, board/member communications, and
financial management. - Strategic
communications experience is highly desirable. - Experience
in fisheries or marine policy with non-governmental organizations, or working with
commercial fishery industry, or a related field is highly desirable.
Education
- A minimum of
a BA or BS degree in a business, finance, organizational development, policy or
related field is required, advanced degree is preferred.
Personal Characteristics
- Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to write clearly
and persuasively, speak in public effectively, and to engage a broad array of stakeholders
at all levels. - Ability to
work effectively as a pivotal lead - taking direction from Board members and Executive
Director, while providing motivational guidance and leadership to colleagues. - Creativity, tenacity, good humor and a high level of energy combined with the
ability to work in a fast-paced environment. - Willingness
to travel 25% of any given month. - Interest
in and commitment to fisheries conservation is essential.
