For over 35 years, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies has been moving the science of ecology forward. We’re an independent non-profit that supports basic environmental research with the potential for transformative impact.

Seeking a Communications Assistant/Writer to join the Communications Department of one of the nation’s leading independent ecological research institutes. The ideal candidate will be a capable writer with experience translating complex scientific issues in a way that resonates with public audiences.

Primary job duties:

Amplify Cary Institute’s scientific, education, and outreach initiatives by creating engaging content for our website, newsletters, press campaigns, social media feeds, event promotion materials, advertisements, and interpretive materials. Will also provide general support to the Communications Office on an as-needed basis, including building networking lists for media outreach and event promotion, supporting Cary Institute-hosted public events, proofreading and contributing to internal and external e-blasts, and assisting other departments with writing/editing work as time allows.

Required skills:

Must have excellent writing and editing skills, as well as an understanding of environmental issues. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, and web editing via a content management system is desirable. Training can be provided. The ideal candidate will be a team player who is adept at planning and executing, has an interest in emerging technology, and can juggle multiple projects.

This is a full-time position in Millbrook, NY (part-time employment is possible for the right candidate). Remote work flexibility; the team is currently working in the office 3 days a week. The Communications Assistant/Writer reports to the Communications Director.

This is a salaried, full-time, non-exempt, benefited position of 35 weekly hours. The regular schedule is 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with required, occasional evening hours for public events.  Cary Institute offers a full array of benefits effective the date of hire as well as a generous vacation policy.
