The Long Island Progressive Coalition (LIPC) fights for structural change at the local, state, and national levels to attain racial justice, build community wealth, and realize a just transition to a 100% renewable energy future. We mobilize Long Islanders through political education, grassroots organizing, leadership development, and the creation of cooperative economic institutions to redistribute wealth and power.

LIPC has a long history of organizing and building power across Long Island since 1979. In today’s world, grassroots organizing combined with cutting edge social media campaigns can move mountains - which is why we are creating a new position for an Communications and Membership Director who will help us win big on our issues, develop winning messages, and work with our amazing leaders on the ground. They will help us build a bold vision around community organizing in achieving transformative change, and will have the ability to work with a team of skilled staff and community leaders who will implement this vision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Main Duties:

  • Serve as a LIPC point of contact for media, including initiating and responding to media contacts, following up with, building rapport with and providing relevant information to media.  With the LIPC Executive Director, determine LIPC’s response to media inquiries and initiation of public statements  Write and disseminate news releases as requested.  Serve as the point of contact for member organizations to respond to and initiate media activities.  
  • Generating email alerts to members on important issues.
  • Designing printed materials including flyers, brochures, and newsletters. 
  • Organizing press events, pitching stories, writing op eds, press releases and press quotes.
  • Representing the organization at events and in coalitions. 

Online Member Relations:

  • Working with LIPC Team, managing recruitment and retention of LIPC members (organizations and individuals)
  • Communicate with members, non-members and others in a relationship building role. 
  • Planning and implementing regular membership meetings with the LIPC team. 
  • Solicit new and renewing membership through social media.  
  • Administrative tasks related to membership and payment processing, coordination of membership renewals, production of membership reports, updating membership data on website and in other functional systems.  Write and update membership communications.  Serve as staff liaison to assigned membership. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Knowledge of New York State legislation and issues on Long Island. 
  • Successful candidates will have a demonstrated understanding of environmental, racial, and social justice issues, and a grounding in grassroots organizing and Long Island. 
  • Qualifications also include verifiable skills in communications and resource development. 
  • Minimum of 3 years in communications, public relations or equivalent experience. 
  • Must possess strong organizational, critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as an attention to detail. 
  • This position will require work on some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines is required. Also essential is a high level of individual initiative and creativity, and experience working with diverse populations. 
  • This position will be a hybrid of remote and in person with regular activities throughout Long Island where transportation is required. 
  • Experience utilizing database management systems. 

Preference will be given to:

  • Candidates who have lived experience within the communities that we aim to serve under social, racial, and economic justice.
  • Candidates who live on Long Island. 
  • Those who have knowledge of or experience in working for a membership organization.
  • Candidates with fluency in a language other than English. While this is not required, our goal is to be as accessible as possible to communities across Long Island, and we value the cultural lens that someone fluent in more than one language can provide.
Terms of Employment
 
Position is a full-time position with health, retirement, vacation, and pension.The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000 based on experience. We offer competitive compensation, relative to experience. This position will report to the Organizing Director.
